Question

Monkey Grip - a functional device?? Damn straight!!!

Hey Jemsters. I see here and there on this site where some of you say you dislike / hate / would prefer not to be there at all / kill it, etc, etc. The Monkey Grip. Um..I'm just wondering if ya'll really know just how functional this grip is. Yeah sure...when I got my first Jem (2000 vwh) and played it for the first couple of weeks - I didn't even realize it was there. But man...now after playing Jems for 5 years......I really realized the other night that I am now nearly at a loss without it. I played my friends RG the other night. Well....it was like I didn't know how to pick up the guitar, lol. Err...where do you grab this thing at Then after I was done playing - I especially noticed it trying to take the guitar off of myself. I automatically grabbed for the grip area....oops...no grip. Um...how do I take this thing off Seriously...I didn't even realize how much I use it. It makes it soo much easier too pick up guitar out of case / carry guitar about (safely) put guitar on / take guitar off / put back into case / changing strings / hold for showing off, etc, etc. Just wondering if anyone else is at the mercy of the grip Or if I am alone in promoting its TOTAL FUNCTIONALITY!! Surely I cannot be.....plus...unlike so many....I actually think it looks cool and adds to the overall aesthetic quality of the universes best guitars

Also - and I could be totally off base here, but I think its saves neck stress. Alot of folks that dont have or use the grip pick up their axes by the neck. After the years....wouldnt all this picking up, etc add to stressing out the neck???? Like I said..I could be totally off with that one

No, you're not alone. Since I first started playing guitar I noticed how awkward it is to carry a guitar around. Usually I grab it where the neck meets the body, and for a long time before I got a Jem, I can remember thinking that monkey grip seemed really practical. Now that I have a Jem, I have enough other guitars still that I haven't become habituated to it, and because of the way I store my Jem (hanging on the wall) when I pick it up, it's usually by the neck, then I immediately strap it on, so nowadays I don't have so much call for carrying a guitar around while it's not strapped on. Well, sometimes when I take a guitar into work, carrying it from the parking lot up to the 8th floor, yeah, miss that monkey grip (Just have a cheapo RG470 for keeping in the office at work.)

So I can definitely relate to seeing the monkey grip as a very practical thing.

i'd be a lot more comfortable using it if it had a cooler name. something like G.I.Joe Kung Fu Grip.

Hehe i agree!! The monkey grip is very useful, i was walking around college during a the interval of a musical i'm in the band in holding my jem by the grip thinking how handy it is

I must admit though when i play my mates RG8670 i always reach for the hole area

ahh yes, the Monkey grip is a must for fun in the sun!

1. We would go guitar shop hoppin to check out hot new gear around the state of Michigan, run in with a Jem by the Monkey grip for fast entering and departures wearing scully glasses.

2. Works great for an effect in guitar competitions, right hand holds the guitar up high using Monkey grip with the left flyin up and down the fret board.

3. Creates conversation when people, say, whoh dude, your guitar has a handle.

4. You can be sneaky & hide if your shy in a photo shute, look through the grip with eyes of fear.

5. If ya need a quick get away, you can run real fast holding the grip, I remember in 1992 a guy asked to see the Jem77FP off the wall in a guitar shop and quickly ran out of the store holding it by the Monkey grip. Don't recomend this type of use, it's disshonest and can lead to metal bars for dinner.

6. Great for checking the balance and blue printed spec of each Jem.

7. Swirl monkey grips rule the Monkey grips, they bring an whole new perspective and freaky swirly flow right through the guitar, come on, how cool is that!

A Monkey Grip is just a Beautiful thing, considering I just added one to my guitar NAT. I now have all my guitars hanging, and a lot of the times I still reach for the monkey grip to take it off the wall..

If you think of it, it just such a simple idea, that work in so many ways..

I just checked the judges scores on the monkey grip and they're holding up 9.5's straight across the board....well, the Romanian judge is holding up a 4.
