Re: My interview with Steve Vai (new Jem confirmation!)

That thing will probably follow suit on the JS20th... 2 models; One painted and the other one with the real thing under the clear along with a ridiculous and an obscene prize for the "real thing". Leave it to Steve and Ibanez to come up with yet another uber expensive guitar that people will complain about. I can just see now the "Complain to Steve about the new Jem" thread....

Jemsite should prepare to boost the bandwidth now! LOL!

My bet is for some means of better stabilizing the trem, like a lock you can switch on. Or maybe countersprings? Those are the only things I can think of that would be "simple" adds to a trem that might make them "revolutionary".
And I wonder if the "pattern" is really "floral" or another kind of pattern?
It should be an interesting few months of speculation. hehe!

I think the one thing we can all agree on is that whatever it is, it will be horrifically expensive.

Nah, I hope not. I don't think it's a "limited" or special edition guitar. Will probably be the same price as the VWH, but made with...basswood, and probably will have Breeds.

I second that. It is going to be a terrible wait for next 3 months

I might have to buy another Suhr in the meantime to ease the wait.

It’s about letting go of your hang-ups, about being afraid of what’s going to happen, about letting go of the big fear of being accepted, or that what you’re playing isn’t good enough. So many people get hung up on that ****. ‘I don’t have the cool gear,’ or whatever that is, you know?

-Steve Vai

After reading the comments in this thread, all I can say is "oh, the irony".

Yeah, he has a point of course but it's a bit like Bill Gates preaching that money isn't important!

Its more like Bill Gates preaching that you don't need to buy a $6000 Alienware gaming PC with Windows to become a computer wiz.

There's a hint of integrety in Vai's statement because you could see it as his hint that you don't need to buy one of his expensive JEMs to express yourself musically. We all know this, but this sentiment obviously crumbles under the ponderous bulk of the almighty GAS.

It's foolish to have hangups about your gear when you're playing, and that was what Steve was saying. Same goes for when you concentrate on the mode you're playing or whether to sweep pick a section or not; when you concentrate on those things you aren't thinkng about the music.

However, when you are picking your tool, all of this stuff is important. Apples and oranges. Steve pays TONS of attention to his tools, just not while he's in mid-song.

I like the very zen like phrase 'you have to remember to forget'.

That is, you have to practice these things over and over and over until they become so second nature that you don't need to think about doing them.

I stole that from Guthrie Govan, so it must be true.

These talented guys know what they're talking about, but they still play exactly what they want.

If someone in the middle of a song in a gig, thinks "gee, I could play like 10 times better if I could only afford that J Custom I want" -- that person gets the "Lamest Musician in the World" award and their opinion officially doesn't count.

No, I think Steve is saying people are too hung up on gear in terms of having "cool gear" making you a better player vs. just "STFU, let go of everything, and play". He's saying to some extent that it shouldn't matter as much as people make it seem to matter. The irony was me joking about how much his "cool gear" matters to us.

Re: My interview with Steve Vai (new Jem confirmation!)

I really don't think Steve has a "hangup" on gear; at least maybe not like the rest of us.
1. He has things made to his specs and designs.
2. He can get it made in any color he wants; even a new model in LNG!
3. He get's said gear for free!
4. If it needs tweaking, he has someone to fix it immediately!
Ah, what a life it must be!

Oh well.... time to go find someone on the net who I can pay lots of money to so they can make my RG1571 cnc body....
LOL!
