My modded UV777PBK-Rd - ...the jury's still out - sorta...

Here's the pic of my freshly modded UV

The Bridge is an Evo-7 (silver pole pieces)
The Middle is the Tom Anderson Custom Wound
The Neck is a PAF-7 (silver pole pieces)

I thought it'd be fun to put some red in there - got the knobs from Ishibashi in Japan - didn't take long, only about 10 days from the day i ordered them to the day they got here. *The shipping wasn't outrageous and the 2 knobs/tip were about $8 US.

I'm considering a red strap, but i'd have to find just the right match. *I'll probaly have forsake the DiMarzio Clip locks too (which Kevan will be proud of me for).

I'm still not sure if I'm crazy about the color scheme. *I may play around with some different color pickguards in photoshop.

Here are my thoughts on the electronics themselves:

The Evo-7 is very close to the Evo-6. *It's got that nice hot output without being overly crunchy. *I really like it. *

I'm not as keen on the PAF-7. *It's a bit darker than the PAF-pro counterpart, but I find I'm able to use it clean on its own (rather than in the 4 position) more than the regular PAF-pro. *It's got a good stratty sound, but it's not quite punchy like i want it. *I'm going to reprogram my preamp a little and I'll give it a few more weeks. *

Overall, I prefer both new pickups to the Blaze 2s. *The Blaze 2s definitely had the crunch, but didn't have the clean. *For my gigs, I need a good sound for both.

I'll be recording some stuff with it soon - check the Mulitmedia section in a few weeks.

Thanks fer looking!

Very very nice!

I think silver is fine for the pickguard (fits in with the red/black/silver combo)

Red strap or silver strap?

How about a red pyramid inlay on the neck?

Look forward to seeing her in the flesh!

very cool...I like the "modded" look

thats why when I put Evos in my RG520 it's gonna be a white EVO in the neck and *a black EVO in the bridge...I like the fact that they don't match exactly...give's it more of a Hot-Rodded look

I think red pyramid inlays would be a bad bad bad idea...

But that's just me...

yeah I'm not into the Red Pyramid inlays, but then again I've never been into modding a guitar neck with inlays...so what do I know?

I think Simon may have been joking around about the inlays.

I'm definitely not even remotely considering red inlays for the neck on this guitar. *I already feel like i desecrated it by putting red p'ups in it!

That looks really good, man. I love the Universe but the one weakness, imho anyway, is the black pickups. It's just a cosmetic, of course, but I like the flashy colors of the past and the black pups just don't do it for me. The red looks really cool.

How red are those pickups? Are they more fire engine red, or a darker red? I am interested in this because of a ickle project I am planning out... And as they are dimarzio's, how much extra did it cost to get them in red?

Never really thought about red pup's, but I must say they look sweet.

I think I will have to get some now and I know exactly what they are going in!

Nice looker.

Hmmm...how describe this shade of red.
I'll start by saying that they're matte finish, not glossy...and thank god for that. *the knobs are shiny and it's kinda yuk. *The color is, i guess, what i would call Red #1. *It's not dark or light, just primary red, the way you'd see it in a set of kids paints. *I was happy when the pole pieces were silver - i thought they were going to come in black. *they compliment the rest of the silver on the guitar.

DiMarzio doesn't charge any extra for different colors. *You just have to special order them (takes 10-14 days in NY). *If your music store tries to charge extra, walk out. *They don't, however, have a list of available colors. *I only knew red existed because of a red RG i saw on ebay once.

Now what the heck is an 'ickle'?

I really hate to say this because of all the posistive feedback, but someone always has to disagree. That is me..

Doesn't seem like red fits in anywhere into the color scheme IMHO. But it is your guitar and do what looks good to you. Which you already did... Now.. if you can get the pyramid in the bottome red along with the ibanez "checkmark" and universe logo and outline red it would look wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better... *although something tells me that isnt possible

Personally, I love the thing! *I mean, pretty much anything goes with black and silver, and red is probably the best choice, it just suits the whole UV777BK "attitude". *Personally, if I had a UV777BK, I'd put an icy-blue mirror pickguard on it. *I just think that would look really sweet. *As for the red inlays and checkmark, I agree.

I just put up a new song recorded entirely on this guitar.

It's here if anyone's interested.

I wonder if a jazz humbucker would work nicely in a UV. any comments on that. And where do i get a jazz humbucker.
