New strap on my Jem and universe

hi folkes..i have to put new straps on my jem Bfp and on my uv77mc.
I have thourght about Dimarzio' clip-lock, but think they will make scrats on my guitars. They also take more place in the boxes, where the guitars will have to lay on them (ind the back of the guitar)
I have thourght about the Schaller Straplocks or the Dunlop SLS1031N Nickel Dual Design Straplok System.
Both systems can be seen on the ****** homepage

anyone have some good advise: Dimarzio Vs Schaller Vs Dunlop

i use dimarzio clip locks, and they work fine for me. this includes using them in my form fitting prestige rg case. they sit on top of your guitar, and i have had no probs with scratches or anything.

Re: New strap on my Jem and universe

I've used two Dimarzio Cliplocks and one homemade straplock (eyelet screws and spring loaded chain clips) and the cliplocks have never caused any scratches on any of the guitars I've owned. Once the strap is unclipped the short ends on the guitar really don't take alot of space at all, just make sure they are running along the sides of the guitar when you pack it in the case and they fit fine.

If you still have worries about scratches you could probably pick up a roll of black velcro and just stick the soft side on the plastic part of the cliplocks for some padding.

Oh, and I definitely recommend the leather cliplocks over the nylon, they cost more but are very comfy and look sweet.

I've got a white cliplock on my PWH. It looks "right" (and I'm not even much of a Vai fan), and honestly the body has taken so much abuse anyway, a few additional scratches will go unnoticed.

Re: New strap on my Jem and universe

i've heard a lot from people that use strap locks that the screws bend/break or rip out over time. I have never heard these complaints from dimarzio cliplock users, I have two myself.

Re: New strap on my Jem and universe

I have Schallers on all my guitars and have never had any issues with them beding or comming out of the guitars, and they have been on some of my guitars for over 12 years.

I like them because you can get just the part that goes on the guitar separate then all you need is 1 strap and 1 set of locks. Then you get the extra pegs for a few dollars and you can have a locking strap on every gutiar for about $5 per guitar instead of having to buy a whole Strap lock system for each one. Plus the Dimarzio clip is plastic which I don't care for if your spending $1000 or more for a guitar, why wyould you put plastic strap locks in it.
Just my opinion

Re: New strap on my Jem and universe

i've never heard of anybody breaking or having problems with the plastic clips on dimarzio. I'm not saying it doesn't happen but from all the people i've known that have used them i've never head of one breaking.

Re: New strap on my Jem and universe

I have Schaller (with a silvery strap) on my HAM and a green DiMarzio on my DSY. When you spend 1500$+ on a guitar you want a matching strap, so sharing a single strap between guitars is not an option. Unless all of your guitars are black.

As for the plastic parts on the DiMarzio cliplocks, they are of excellent qualtity, very tough nylon. Nobody questions the strength of nylon "seatbelt" straps. They do have a metal clip version available.

The fact that the Schallers are metal means they become a big pain when the screws unseat themselves, which does happen on my Jem. When the Schaller straplocks loosen they start to rattle. The DiMarzio cliplocks use washers in the right places so they never rattle. The washers also make sure that the screws are less prone to loosening themselves.

If I come across a silver DiMarzio strap with cliplocks I will switch.

Re: New strap on my Jem and universe

I'm not saying the plastic will break easily, I'm just saying I would rather not have plastic.

As for color matching straps, again not my thing a basic black strap works, I would rather the attention be on my playing than whether or not my wine red les paul has a red strap, my blue strat has a blue strap and my firebird has a vintage sunburst strap.

Again that's just me.
I personally have nothing but good things to say about the Schaller strap locks, but it looks like I'm alone there.

Re: New strap on my Jem and universe

hi again..thanks for all the feedback on my quest. i am thinking about to buy a leather cliplock and a white, blue or black nylon cliplock from dimarzio for my guitars. then i will try to fix the plastic with some rubber, so they don't get scratched (speciely careful with my uv77mc, which is in perfect condition but which i would like to use).

Re: New strap on my Jem and universe

I use a washer. SO the lineup goes like this...

Body--->Strap--->Washer---> screw threw them all...

The stap is permanently on the guitar but there is no way it's coming off and there is no chance of scratches. Best thing? It costs about a nickle.

Anyhow, the Dimarzio straps I have bought in the past are just too damn long, Even at the tightest setting. I play a little lower than Petrucci and the clip locks I have had just won't go that high. Might be operator error of course... LOL

Re: New strap on my Jem and universe

I use cliplocks on all of my electric and love them.

I don't take off my strap buttons. Not permanently....

I do take the strap buttons off at 1st.

I take a soldering iron and widen the hole that you'd normally put the screw through on the cliplock strap. It takes a little time and a very hot iron. I use a angled clipper to clip off the excess plastic when it melts.

I make the hole big enough to put the SMALL end of the strap button through.

I put the small end of the strap button through and screw it back on the guitar the way it normally goes on, this time it has the strap on it too.

The hole is still too small to slide off of the large end of the strap button, so it never comes off and you still use the original screw and strap button. You don't have to worry about an after market screw stripping your wood.

I do this of course to both ends of the strap.

I got this idea when I 1st got my VWH. I thought the gold strap buttons were to nice looking to just take off and put in a box and never see them again. THen this came to mind. So if I decide to sell one, I can take off my cliplock and not have to worry about finding the strap buttons because they are already there.

EB straps for me. I've had a bad experience with the Dimarzio clip lock strap.
