Direct mounted by a mile
It sounds better, and installing pups on a pickguard is a very irritating job. Not that I would change the pups on a UV, but on my RG2027x the actual fitting was easy-peasy. The wiring, that's a whole different story with piezo-equiped guitars...
I like the look of a guitar with direct mounted pups better than the look of a guitar with a pick-guard, but that's personal (just like the rest I said, well D'oh!)

Ditto. My dream jem would not have a pickguard... Don't like them.

This is my opinion too ...
and i don t understand why such amazing guitars have pickups mounted on this pickgard .
The sound should be much better on a UNIVERSE or JEM with the pickups direct mounted, don t know why ibanez doesn t make them like that?

As much tone as Vai gets now, I guess he doesn't like/need them. Plus, I would think it's easier to fix a defective pickguard than stripped wood. But I too would like to know the rationale here. Are there any direct-mounted JEMs?

The newer floral patterns are direct mounted. I don't know about the rest...

ibanez should do direct
mounted pickups
, and a pickgard that wouldn t hold the pickups.
it would be easy to do , and would probably cost less (no need to put pickups on it ).
the
jem bfp
was direct mounted too.

I'm 110% sure that my BFP is NOT direct-mounted, I don't know about others
Maybe they started directmounting them in 1993 or 1994...
Because I'm such a lousy photographer you can see it clearly on this pic (check the right screw on the neck hum) :

When I bought mine I didn't know that there were direct-mounted ones as well, I would have preferred one of those
