Planning to do a crime...

I love my Jem 10th, but lately it´s been my #3 guitar because with my last two amps (CAE 3+SE and now Bogner XTC) it sounds much more sterile/toneless than my other two guitars.
I´m pretty sure it is because of the pickups, being ceramic. I always feel the difference between ceramic and magnetic pups. So i think i´ll change them. I´m more near of a couple of Lyndy Fralin-Tom Holmes pup, but maybe an air norton-air zone or SD alnico pro II-JB would be a good option too.
Oppinions?
Thanks

If you got it for its "collectible" value, leave it as it is, get whatever else basswood jem and tweak as needed...

If you got it cause you like the killer looks and dont give a damn about possible resale value ever, go for it, after all its yours

Just stick whatever pick-ups you want into it and keep the stock ones.

If you ever have to sell it (God forbid... ) all you have to do is put them back on. You weren't gonna sell them for two bucks anyway?

Hmmm, non-magnetic pickups = no sound.

I think you mean ceramic magnets vs alnico (aluminum/nickel/cobalt) magnets. Pickups with alnico magnets are "usually" warmer and rounder sounding, but there are some great sounding ceramic magnet pickups. The Duncan Distortion is a ceramic magnet pickup.

I had a Duncan distortion in the past, nice pu but not one of my faves. Better a JB or Custom 5 for me.

Weel done Urko.... Guitars are for playing, not to be at home getting dust!
If your sound doesn't match with mag PU, change them!! If you finally decide to sell it, re-install them (and send me your first e-mail please!!!)

Re: Planning to do a crime...

Pa qué?... Pa cagal-la?

This is not funny in English so I won't translate it.

Seriously... I tried thousand of pickups till I found what I wanted in my Les Paul. Try a EVH from the Seymour Duncan custom shop for the bridge. Do you like that Eddie's brown tone? get one of this and you got it. For the neck I installed a Voodoo 60'. It's a "hot-paf". Magnet is 5 (usually for the bridge) but I tried one with magnet 3 (the one supposed for the neck) and was very dark for me.

Therefore the 2 of them are originally designed for the bridge but one of them is in the neck and love it there.

Whatever you do, it's easy to put the original pick-ups back so Why not to try?

The only problem is that each one of commented pickups cost 140 bucks plus transport because are boutique pickups so It is expensive if you are not sure (as nobody is ). I spent a lot of money in pickups until I found what I wanted.

However this is regarding the Les Paul. I must say EVOs will remain in my Jem forever. I bought that guitar because I loved the "full lot" so I won't change anything.

Re: Planning to do a crime...

I did love em when i played with rack effects, but now i play straight to the amp with just a cheap delay pedal (soon replaced by a Replica), and evo´s don´t work well for me.
Voodoos are Peter Florance´s, aren´t they? I thought about them, also Lindy Fralin, John Suhr, Jim Rolph, almost bought a couple of Tom Holmes (still can!)...but they were very expensive and didn´t know how they would work with the jem.
I´m happy with the Duncans, i´m very curious about the VH signature too. Maybe the next one
Another great pickup is Andy Timmons´signature, got it on an AT100 an sounds great too (i love that guitar as much as the 10th)
