putting a jem neck on rg body

in 2 days i have the chance to put a jem7v neck on an rg450gx body.

this is the guitar i am putting the neck on. ignore the fact it says rg390 as it is actually an rg450gx

http://spaces.msn.com/fastfinger89/photos/?_c02_owner=1

i have changed the pickups to evos and that has been the only change i have made.

this is what the orginal guitar looked like. if you go to rg series and then go to rg 450gx you can see it there.

http://www.ibanez.com/parts/2004_PAR...ndex_spec.html

the neck on this guitar at the moment is a wizard 2, exactly the same as the neck on an rg350dx. i have looked at the neck measurements on ibanez.com between the ibanez rg350dx and the ibanez jem7v and the only difference is the radius which is

jem

Scale 648mm/25.5"
a : Width at Nut 43mm
b : Width at Last Fret 56mm
c: Thickness at 1st 19mm
d : Thickness at 12th 21mm
Radius 430mmR

rg350dx

Scale 648mm/25.5"
a : Width at Nut 43mm
b : Width at Last Fret 56mm
c: Thickness at 1st 19mm
d : Thickness at 12th 21mm
Radius 400mmR

i think the radius doesnt matter because when the neck of the guitar hits the body it goes flat on the backside so it can fit into the body by sliding in. therefore he radius changes.

i measured the width of my rg neck on the last fret and it is 56mm just like a jem. so as far as i know the jem neck will fit without any problems.

can someone please varify whether this will work for me or not.

will it fit or not?

will it ruin my guitar, tonewise and playability wise.

ps- if the jem neck wont fit, will a j-custom rg neck with the vine inlay fit?

so i have two options

1. jem7v neck
2. rg prestige neck with vine inlay.

all im trying to do is put a ibanez neck with a vine inlay on that will fit. so if you know any other necks that will fit or any problems that i will encounter please let me know.

ps- dont ask about how im gettin these necks because is a long story.

cheers

Re: putting a jem neck on rg body

I didn't bother to check out the pics, but as long as they are both either AANJ style or the old style heel bolt pattern it should be fine. You can't match a AANJ with a old style unless there is some work done.

Re: putting a jem neck on rg body

Hi tobi,
I think it will fit.
And it will be killer if its a 7V neck...
I believe the important things are 1) neck joint (aanj or square heel), 2) scale length and number of frets, 3) width of heel and nut.
The radius doesn't matter so much, this you compensate for at the end when setting the action of the guitar.

So how are you getting the jem neck then?

My uncle was the general manager of ibanez in australia from the early eighties to mid nineties and he is pulling a few strings through his contacts in japan and the USA to get me either a jem7v neck or rg prestige neck with the vine inlay. i was going to ask for a new jem but that would be asking to much of him.

jem 7v in australia is 5000 dollars. so customizing an rg to look like one is cheaper.

anyone else know if this will work.

Re: putting a jem neck on rg body

Yes the AANJ is the one with the 4 bolts and rounded part of the body where the heel sits into.

The old square heel joint is the one with the square plate on it.

So long as its the same joint on guitar and neck, it will be fine.

do you intend to route for a lion claw or a monkey grip as IMO the white RG given a jem neck will make the guitar look like one of those e8ay fakes.

Just don't sell it saying that it will give "good luck" to the buyer and his family

That's really cool btw - nice how you have that connection.

Re: putting a jem neck on rg body

lol dont worry i wont be selling ti anytime soon.

yeh i only found out around 6 months ago when he told me at a family get together thingo.

Its funny because he gave up General manager of ibanez for australia to open a FISHING GEAR AND TACKLE SHOP...LOL

when mick jagger toured with satriani he tagged along as manager and got to know joe really well. he has also met steve many times, mostly durng the eighties to discuss the jem model and other ibanez related ibanez things.

He said that of all the players he has met ( think of some of the most famous ibanez endorsees such as Pat methany and George benson. and many of the famous guitar stars from the seventies and eighties he has met and toured with, he believes that the most well rounded player is JOE SATRIANI.

he reckons satch is he greatest guitarist that he has ever met!!!

whenever he comes over i pick his brain about steve and joe.

Re: putting a jem neck on rg body

Funny you should mention that Joe Satriani is a great guy. I was talking to the guys from Alans Music in Sydney and they all reckon that he is the nicest guy in the world too.

I don't think there will be any problems I think you will be able to stick your neck on the line and fit the JEM neck to the RG.

Sorry just had to return the pun.

Where in Sydney are you animal? I am at Cronulla.
