Question about Jem necks

Hi, I'm obviously new to the forums. I have seven Ibanez guitars. None of which are Jems, but I do have an '06 Universe.

I'm interested in buying the new Jem77VBK. My question is; Is the Jem neck the same as the Wizard II neck? Even though the Ibanez website calls the Vai necks 'Jem Prestige' they seem to have the exact same profile, as the Wizard II. So is there any difference between the way the two feel? Thanks, in advance!

I don't think it has the same profile as a Wizard II(I've never tried one). The neck on the Jem is called a Jem Prestige Neck. It's the same neck that's on the RG1570 and most of the other prestige guitars. But they call it the Wizard Prestige for the 1570 and the Jem Prestige for the Jem. They're the exact same thing though.

Wizard, Wizard II, Jem etc are all different profiles. Don't know about the 77VBK, but the 7VWH has a much thicker neck than a wizard, but not as rounded as a Wizard II. That said, the Jem neck has continually altered in profile over the years and between models.

The Jem neck feels somewhere between a Wizard and Wizard II to me, and it's much more rounded than the original 80s Wizards I'm used to.

It's also important to remember the Jem has different sized frets to an RG, which alters the feel a lot.

Jem Prestige neck (2007):
Length: 648mm/25.5"
Width At Nut: 43mm
Width At Last Fret: 56mm
Thickness At 1st Fret: 19mm
Thickness At 12th Fret: 21mm
Radius: 430
Frets: Dunlop 6105

Wizard neck (2007):
Scale Length: 648mm/25.5"
Width At Nut: 43mm
Width At Last Fret: 56mm
Thickness At 1st Fret: 18mm
Thickness At 12th Fret: 20mm
Radius: 430
Frets: Jumbo

I thought I've read before that Vai makes slight changes to the neck shape/size to fit his needs? So there may be slight differences but they might not be accounted for on the Ibanez site? This may or may not be true, but for example you Jim say your VRMR is your favorite neck - and something about BRMR necks in general you love. Minus the vine inlay, wouldn't the dimensions and shape of the BRMR neck be the same as the VWH? And then yet you can feel the difference? Or am I out of whack and all Jem model necks are pretty much the same unless made obvious by say a magazine interview or something?

Drow, the Brmr neck is not the same neck as the Vwh. It's thinner than the Vwh neck (slightly diff specs) but not as thin as a Wizard. Plus my Vrmr is custom and installing the vine may have (and most probably did) knock down the dimensions a tad. Whatever the case may be, I love it

BTW - close second on favorite neck = BFP

3rd = vwh/vsbl

MR neck is exactly the same as a WH neck from the same years.

The old regular "JEM" neck was 19-21mm, they're now 18-20. Of course there's also the Wizard 17-19 JEM necks. They're also 2mm wider now but that's another story.

The Wiz2 is a terrible square D shaped profile and AFAIK only used on Korean guitars.

There is no MR neck pre 5 piece

If you're comparing an MR to a pre 5 piece it's not exactly fair as the WH neck changed also and is exactly the same as the MR from the same year

I WAS comparing the MR neck to a pre 5 piece Vwh neck. I should have specified as like this:

"Drow, I own a 2000 vwh. The neck specs are DIFFERENT than those of an MR and has a slightly different feel.

The MR have the 5-pc prestige neck (as do the Vwh from 04' on)

I seem to prefer the 5 piece prestige
