Re: SK Clone project

Just don't "burn" through the paint with your fingers. Use a sanding block or you with get strange uneven lines from your fingers.

Re: SK Clone project

Moving right along, couldn't wait to get into the claw today.

I find it easier to cut the tape like this. I printed the plan out to scale and put clear packing tape over it, something for the masking tape to sit on without taking away much of it's adhesion. And was able to neatly cut the lines I needed.

I use Tamiya masking tape whenever I need tight lines with no bleed.

I first sprayed white then gave it an undercoat of yellow, knowing the green transparent will let it bleed through, then applied the green. I'm going to let it cure more over night and with very lightly wet sand where the green meets the pink. Overall I'm happy with it.

Re: SK Clone project

Thanks, I'm really happy about the way the green turned out for the claw.

I'm also working on a unique neck plate for this guitar. All I had is a blank plate for the project. The chances of coming across an original 777 plate is not good, so I decided to customize the plate, nothing too fancy, but it will be one of a kind for this build. Depending on how it turns out, I'll post pics soon.

Re: SK Clone project

Anxious to see how the clear reacts with it. I was using some NEON's - and at first I had reduced them too much (wasn't my typical paint I use) and the clear made my pink look like a RFR - not a bad thing, cause now I know how to get that color. So then I called the manufacture to see how it should be reduced - and perfect - clearing didn't affect it at all - other than making it nice and glossy.

Currently playing with Pink and Green. I also have an orange that should look pretty sweet!

Looking good!

Re: SK Clone project

I put the first round of clear on yesterday and it didn't change the color, but I didn't have the exact desired pink from the base coat. I never seen RFR in person, but maybe it doesn't look that way some. SK is the on color that can vary so much for any wner over the years. I'll have clear coat progress up later this week.

Here's the little neck plate I made. It would have been nice if I had a JEM decal that size, but actually printed it out on papaer and used an X-acto knife to cut the tape to make my own decal to backmask the pink color on the plate, the plate has several coats of clear on it to protect it. Anyway...here's how it came out.

Re: SK Clone project

Thanks Swirltop.

Here's some progress of the clear coating. I need to sand out a few runs from the last coat. And continue on. I got a nice set of micromesh pads from Stew-Mac from 1500-20000 grit that will be done for the final coats.

Hard to get a good pic to capture the color right, sometimes the pic makes it look more orange than what it is (depending on the angle and lighting). Anyway, here's some pics, and have almost all my gear for assembly also. (I know I need yellow knobs, there on the way)

Re: SK Clone project

Did you test fit the pickguard and electronics before you started painting the body?
I didn't think about a pickguard because it's rear route.

Re: SK Clone project

Yeah, most everything was taken into account. I had to cut the hole in the front for the 5 way switch to sit properly. I got longer pots to accomodate going through the wood and pickguard, and the pickguard lines up.

Re: SK Clone project

Yeah, got the neon yellow knobs in today.

One thing that is aggravating me is waiting on the headstock decal. I order from Best-decals.com and should have read the reviews beforehand. No response from customer service when I email, their phone number is disconnected, and I hear most wait about a month or more for their order. Just holds me up from doing anything on the neck.

I get my decals from paintandcut on ebay. If he doesn't have an auction up just ask, he's put them up for me before. He sends 2 for the price of 1 and even coming from the UK I get them in a week. The vinyl is thinner than most as well so it's easier to cover...
