So my local luthier tells me that when I'm using the sustainer driver........
....i can only play my jem in the
bridge position
. Is this right??? I thought for sure that I could use the driver with any pickup, not just the bridge. he said that the sustainer driver (which is part of the
neck pickup
) and the neck pickup cannot be used simoultaneously.

No he is right! The driver is placed at the bridge position. You have an off/on switch right?

o.k. I went to fernandes website and I now understand. When the driver is activated, it automatically switches your guitar to the bridge position. that's the way it was designed. when you turn the sustainer off, everything goes back to normal.

You do realize that in order to install the sustainer you have to REMOVE the neck pickup from the guitar, right?
the sustainer is NOT "part of the neck pickup", its a whole separate unit that goes in the same hole... (thus the need for the
neck pup
to go)

yes I know, but the sustainer driver also serves as a "neck pickup". was just wondering if I could use them simoultaneously

I doubt you can even do it on that - its all to do with crosstalk between the driver and pickups close to it.

yeah my bad. i thought you guys were saying the fernandes cannot be used as a neck pickup at all. same too, the sustainiac also cannot be used as neck pickup when its turned on.

The Jackson/Floyd Rose sustainer (used in the PC1 models) can be used in all positions.

The Floyd version is inferior and is no longer made.

I saw a Fernandez guitar with a neck and
bridge humbucker
and a single in the middle and it worked with either the neck or the
bridge pickup
, whichever you select. Might be a new thing, or maybe they routed the sustainer unit into the body of the guitar.

man, I'm about to go jump off a bridge I'm so pissed. this local tech has told me 9 freakin times to "come back tommorow and it'll be done." it's going on two and a half weeks now. SAturday he told me when I called, "come in monday morning. It's finished but I want to keep it this weekend to make sure there are no bugs in it." Well, I go to the store this morning at 9:45 and sit there all day untill 2:45 waiting for this ass hat, and he never shows up or calls. here I am sitting at my computer, still, with NO JEM. I'm about to file a police report for theft.

When you turn on the Sustainer, it automatically switches to the bridge pickup only, regardless of what your pickup selector indicates. That's the way they work.
They take the signal from the bridge pickup, amplify it, then pump out a magnetic field from the neck pickup. If you use anything but the bridge pickup, you get magnetic crosstalk (feedback). You need to keep the sensing pickup as far away from the driver as possible. That's why the driver is in the
neck position
and it operates by amplifying the bridge pickup signal
only
.

Darren is a million percent correct about this!
It will not/can not possibly work off the neck pickup. They have not come up with any new Sustainer that can do it. It is not possible!
