dunno if you'll get many offers for a UVGR for a jem unless it's a LNG or something.

I love the older UVs too. The necks on them play so much better imo. I do miss my UV777BK however.

Re: So what's so DIFFERENT on those old Universes? What makes them so awesome?

I tested the my oldstyle UV vs the AANJ of the new one and I think it is all "player voodoo".

Maybe some people the old neck joint makes then nostalgic enough to play better, but the sound difference is so minimal, that it makes by far more impact if I sneeze on the treble knob of my amp.

Only thing that I thought it might impact was sustain, but funnily my new UV seems to have slightly (again very minimal) better sustain than the old one, which might simply be that the setup is also in better shape.

Again I fall back to the fact that it is not the old UV that sounds better it is more training hours and not vintage guitars....

I've thought about this quite a bit. I think given the variation in materials and manufacture I can see that things might come together in a particularly beneficial way and you end up with a stunning guitar.
The trick is to avoid the cases when everything comes together badly and you end up with a dog.
I think Ibanez is one of the companies that manage to avoid the bad combinations pretty well, (ever played a bad strat or Las Paul? I know I have!) which is why I like them, but maybe, some would say, there's a risk they miss the really good...

That of course is very true. With my newest UV it was the first I grabbed, that I bought, whereas I had to test a total of 27! Les Paul Stds. to get the one I liked... and the shop assistant was near a nervous breakdown.

for me it is the difference in necks,i like the old better.those are a litle thinner.further are the guitars both great!

but there is some out of space mega magic in some guitars nobody understands unless your in love with it!

I'd have to disagree there. I owned a '90 UV777GR, a '90 UV7PWH, and a '91 UV7BK/Green all at the same time (still have the PWH and the BK)... wasn't really a lot of differece tonally between them, the PWH is actually the brightest sounding of the three.
