Sounds of the Jem7dbk - variety of music

Hello, with my recently purchased jem7d....with evolution pickups

! *I was wondering what kind of a variety i am going to get on this guitar as far as sound. *Will i be able to play something by slash (guns n roses) and van halen as well as clapton and vaughan.....or is that too big a range to play over? *Just wondering what the capabilities of this thing are with evolution pickups instead of the breeds. *thank you much. *-Kyle

P.S. i plan on purchansing a roadhouse strat to get the srv and clapton sound im looking for, just wondering if it can be duplicated with a jem7dbk.

Sorry to inform you Kyle but the d has Breeds. I'm sure that won't stop you from enjoying it though!

What Rich said, unless you bought it used from someone who changed out the pups. *The good news is, for the tones you are looking for, the Breeds are much warmer sounding than Evos and should get you closer to the Slash and VH sounds. *Positions 2 and 4 will give you some good stratty sounds too. *Don't know if you'll get a great SRV sound but you should be able to get pretty close to a Cream era Clapton sound.

yes the guitar was actually factory ordered with evo's installed! *I dont really know the difference too much about the "warmness" of the sound (please elaborate

), all i know is that my friend for some reason put evo's in his js1000 and he loves it and i love the way it sounds, so hopefully i will be pleased!

In my definition, especially as a Les Paul player, warmness of tone is as follows (bear with me, describing difference in sound is slightly subjective): *

warmth: *slightly lower output, more mid-range and bass, more "even" sound, with lower peaks in prominence of frequencies....more balance.....smoothness of sound, less "jagged" or "grating" of a tone, organic sounding, think 70's rock, or B.B. King, for good reference, or for that matter, any blues master (as well as Steve's tone in FTLOG), less harmonic overtone (in my opinion)....something your parents MIGHT feel comfortable listening to, in some cases...;-)

non-warmth (for lack of a better word): *high-output, high treble definition, less midrange, more "harsh" or "abrasive" sound, more feedback/squealing, more "metallic" or "mechanic" sounding, more "cut"....think 80's metal and "butt-rock".....less soothing sound, think of Steve's tone in the last "movement" of the Fire Garden Suite

Hope my long-winded explanation and opinions help!

When I was trying the VWH and even 555 in the stores, I found the Evos rather...loud. And a bit too treble-y for my tastes. Then again, I like to have a thick, Smashing Pumpkins type rythm sound.
Gotta say, I love the breeds- I finally own a DBK and it just sounds great. Really full-bodied, warm sounding humbuckers. Don't care for the single-coil, but the 'in-between' pickup selections (positions 2 and 4) are fantastic. The position one up from the bridge pu sounds exactly like SV's tone in 'Sisters'. You can get a Stratty tone from the center pu (esp. if you pick hard). The neck pickup is just godly. I'm still toying with the bridge pu to unlock all of its tonal secrets...

While we're sorta on the topic...
My custom is coming together very quickly. *I have an Evo in the neck positon and haven't purchased a bridge pup yet. *Would anybody suggest tossing a breed in there for a crunchier neck sound or will the Evo suffice...?

UH OH! *i hope this means im not getting screwed i better ask the guy i bought this from if he still has those breeds. i was going for a warmer more blues sound......but then again.......i have a roadhouse strat for that, that will get me all the blue i need, i can use the 7d as a shredding guitar then.

Want a bluesy sound? *Turn the tone way down and play in position 2, 3, or 4!

ok evo's are loud, but after playind jem10's 7D equipped with an X2N I thought they were quite docile.

I like evos (just dont turn off the distortion) and I like the breeds. they are two completely different animals. the breed pickups are kinda versatile, use them for Dream Theater thro Stanley Jordan.

for your custom project I think Id go with a tonezone as my pickup of choice. Extremely versatile pickup. after that Id go with either a Breed or paf pro.

exactly what are the tonezones? *what kind of sound would i get with a paf pro? *and last but not least.....what the hell would the guitar sound like with a evo in the neck and a x2n at the bridge?!?!?!?!?

yes I'm thinking about sticking Evo's or Breeds in a JS1000 as well. I play a lot of Yngwie Malmsteen, Vai, Satriani and Randy Rhoads.....any suggestions?

kyle to answer your question Id have to say loud!!!
but ask jem10 he has that exact combination. the guitar is wild. The combined output for the two pickups is almost a whole volt!!!!!!!!!

tonezones are nice and chuncky, but have lots of high end too so they dont sound all bassy. grate for solos and chord work.

Kinda like evo but a bit more friendly. (hope jay doesnt hear that)

paf pro is kinda like the tz but smooth as a buttered babe, they go very well togethor

Well, if we are talking about pickups anyway, i'll use the opportunity to ask about the blaze pu's on the universe. I never actually played the UV plugged in, so i'm wondering about the tone you can get from the blazes. Are they warmer than evo's? What 6-string humbacker can they be compared to?
