squeal

Position 2 and 4 shouldn't squeal under high gain should it? Those positions hum cancel do they not? I'm wondering if my middle pickup is microphonic.

position 2 and 4 are split coil. As far as i know they are just like position 2 and 4 on a strat. So I don't think they cancel but even single coils shouldn't squeal. I would try to see if 3rd position squeals or not, if it doesn't then its the humbucker, in which case the pup probably needs come potting. you can also test which pickup is microphonic by holding each one of them FIRM when they're squealing. If it stops then it probably means that one is microphonic. Hope that helps

Position 3 also squealed. I'll try holding them tomorrow when I can crank it up Thanks.

I had a RG 7 string (with dimarzios) which used to squeal horribly at higher volume, until I realised that I had the pickups too close to the strings. I wound them down and the squeal disappeared. Might not be it in your case but worth a try - are the pickups very close to the strings? I actually thought it sounded nicer aswell once I lowered the pickups, as I had more control over volume/gain with the volume pot. Just a thought.

oh yeah, serratus brought up a great point. I just remembered that the bridge Paf Pros in my FP used to squeal too and it turned out that i had it too loose. I guess i was looking for that extra bite. So you can try that. You might already have high output pickups, you probably don't need them that high. I remember seeing a picture of evo and her pups were almost level with the pickguard. It's something you should try. If it still squeals, you should probably get it potted or call Dimarzio if its still under warranty

Is it possible for a wiring problem or volume pot or something to cause the squealing at high gain?

i don't really know too much about wiring and what can a bad wire cause what and all but the squealing you described sounds like the pickup went microphonic, which in theory has quite little to do with wiring so wiring wouldn't be my primary concern.

I don't think its a microphonic pickup because at high gain all positions do it equally.

Very true. Thanks.

While we are at it, which wiring diagram is correct for a 99 Universe?
