Steinberger gearless tuners...

I was thinking about trying out the Steinberger tuners. Well, "try out" is perhaps the wrong phrase. I really just like the way they look, and obviously on a double locking guitar, it doesn't make a whole lot of mechanical difference.

In any event, they seem to require a 10mm (13/32") diameter peghole. Does anyone have a universe neck (uv777bk) that would care to measure... although I'm guessing since all the jems/universe's use Gotoh tuners as far as I'm aware that the peghole sizes are all the same.

TIA

EDIT: bugger... nevermind. Apparently they have an alignment pin that would require drilling a pilot hole. Since I don't have a drill press or any desire to drill into my nearly new Universe, I'll pass for the time being

I thought the aligning pin was so small it would basically push in, no drilling required?

Been interested in a set of these since seeing them on Buckethead's swirled Steinberger many years ago. Considering them on some new projects.

Re: Steinberger gearless tuners...

I use them on all my guitars. You don't need to drill a pilot hole. Just push them in as hard as you can with your hand to get them started and they will align themselves when you tighten them. I use them in conjunction with with moses graphite necks and an LSR roller nut on my S-guitars. Awesome tuning stability, neve use the fine tuners. just the steinbergers. Even if you use them with a locking nut it makes string changes alot easier. I've been playing for 20 yrs. now and I started on steinberger headless guitars. Then I use the steinberger headstocked GS guitars that were equipped with the gearless tuners. In all 20 years I have never owned a guitar that used conventional tuners. I don't even know how to change strings with conventional tuners, LOL!! Pretty pathetic really, LOL!!
