No, it's not red lace. As someone stated it has a VWH neck mine just has a 550 (?) neck. I bought the body (lacewood top, mahogany base) on Ebay for 80 or 100 bucks. It was right at the time Lace was for sale. I bought the gold hardware off of someone here and the neck I had.

I figured "what the heck?" and threw it together. Way to dark sounding for me even with Evos in it. Sounds great for rhythm tracks. It would really make a great jazz guitar if you can get past the looks.

Don't be fooled by the pictures. The one I did only the creator could love. the front is excellent. It was actually white red and black but the clearcoats (polyU) yellowed quickly. the clear is about an 1/8th of an inch thick. The sides and back are an absolute mess...LOL

All I did was:

1 Take coat hanger and tie to pack strap nut.
2 hand guitar by hanger so the horns are pointing down
3 poor paint on it starting with the darker color.

That's it. Want to talk about a mess????? It was a ton of fun. It was the first time I ever tried doing something like this and had a ball. Experimenting is fun.

Darren at ATD and I go back a life time. I have never asked him about what he does, and if he did he probably wouldn't tell me anyhow. I have no clue how he (and Herc) or anyone responsible for finishing guitars does such a nice job. They are truly artists...

Hope this helps

Hey, I just found out how the swirls are done!!! It was on Ed Roman's site ironically enough. Here's the link: http://www.**************.com/custom/photoswi.htm

Basically the guitar is submergerd in water, then the paint is floated on the top of the water and then the guitar is removed. It makes a lot of sense. Something to add to the list of things to do this summer.

Well, I think most of us know that portion.

But there is a lot more to it than meets the eye

The art of dipping goes back a while. The art of doing it to a guitar goes back to 1973 (Darren knows better) when Darren at ATD tried it. Darren will tell anyone all you have to do is float paint on water and pull a guitar through it.

The questions I have always asked (and never get a response to bwhaha) is
1) What water temp?
2) What water type?
3) Paint primer?
4) Body treatment?
5) Paint type?
6) Paint consistancy?
7) Does over all water volume matter for paint viscosity?

I could go on for a while... These are the variables that took darren some time to learn... I have tried it and never got any good results

Not worth the $400 bucks for me to figure out. The clearcoating alone is not worth $400 for me to do... hahahahahaha

I already tried to make some paintings multicolor swirl at my home. In the truth, already I made nine and two had been perfect.

The question number one is: the ink, in contact with the water, hardens and dries in 1 minute, forming a film.

Two: you need to dilute the ink and this cannot be very thick. The ink cannot be very transparent, to not disclose primer of the body of the guitar.

Three: you have to choose the best position to dive the body of the guitar and the best position to remove it, without making dirty or spotting the done work!
Before removing the body, the face of the water is necessary to clean all, removing all the ink. You need to have two pairs of hands to make this!
A pair to hold the guitar inside of the water, and another pair to clean the remaining ink in the face of the water. Everything this before removing the body of the water...

Four: you cannot choose the effects, the way of the ink. You cannot choose the directions of the swirls... You don't choose nothing. It left the water, thus will be.

Five: You need to use 500 liters of water and you need a great water tank, with 1,50 meters of diameter, with a meter of height, at the very least. All the ink that remains is wasted and turns garbage.

Six: the varnish. You have to use a thick coat, with some layers, without sandpapering the painting, covering all the imperfections.

ASAP, i will include photos of swirls that i made. But it was not far from easy to learn alone herein Brasil. I ruined a great portion of ink, hehehehe

Believes this or not, it is this.

My english is very bad, i know that...
But i hope that all of you can understand.

C Yah!

I recall doing some swirls on paper a long time ago. It wasn´t very complicated. water + ink floating on the surface. dip the paper. take it out. and you have a weird pattern. Not sure I´d want to dip a guitar (especially a neck-through) in a watertank though... don´t know what kind of ink to get either (anyone know?).

a bath-tub is large enough for the operation btw.
