This was a novelty that played out well 22years ago. They kept it up for 15 years, but its time has come and gone.

I couldn't disagree with you more… I would LOVE to own a new FP Jem. The fact that my 18 year old FP is basically worn out and the fact that I still absolutely love her definitely comes into play... Floral Jems are very special imo and to me they define what a Jem should be, but that’s just me and probably a few thousand other souls… Taste varies of course… I’d love to finally retire my ’91 FP, hang her on the wall and get a new one to continue where she left off!!!

Re: The 2010 Flower JEM

I have nothing against the old ones, even if I prefer the fluorescent Jems myself, but I'm not interested in reliving the past and I don't see why Vai should (outside of a very limted 20th anniversary or similar.)

This isn't about taste, this is a about a fundamental error in product strategy, as flawed as only offering black ad white.

I'd rank the FPs below the RB, BSB, HAM, BRMR, DNA, 20th and DBK in terms of interesting and innovative finishes. I think innovation and creativity should outweigh pure beauty when it comes to the design of Jems, as it should for Vai's music.

As FPs go the old FP was semi-interesting because of the story behind it (drapes) but that won't fly this time. The BFP was a basic paisley pattern that everybody was doing (IIRC there was a pink paisley Fender, perhaps even a signature)

If there is something "revolutionary" on the new FP, as has been referred to in interviews, then it will hardly be reliving the past will it?

I'm certainly most interested in the "revolutionary trem" that's coming.

You'd have to assume it's not on any other Ibanez ... right?

Correct. The floral JEM is supposed to be the first, maybe even the only, Ibanez to have it.

I wouldn't worry about it, our speculation fountains have dried up for now :

So we have about 3 months to wait til the next Namm right?

How many main variations are there possible in the tremolo ... maybe a return to the old EVH wang bar at the front.

I think it's interesting that Vai has such a fanbase that he can get his fans to buy his signature guitar with flowers on it.

I agree with you on the fact that Floral defines the Jem for you...I have an 89 77fp that I could never retire...It is just pure magic and has actually become an extension of me after so many years. I am awaiting a new floral like an expectant parent... And no matter how good or bad it is I am sure I'll fall madly in love with it...

Most of us are throw backs to the 80's and are secure enough in our masculinity to admit to liking pretty things...I love my wife and she's pretty, so why can't my guitar be pretty also. When I first saw the floral Jem in a magazine, it was without a doubt the most beautiful instrument I had ever seen. Kind of the way some view PRS or AAAA top Gibsons...

I believe steve has a guitar somewhere that is an edge cut in half and mounted so you can move half the bridge at a time.

Re: The 2010 Flower JEM

My wife certainly doesn't understand, but when I was 19 I saw an FP in a guitar shop in Adelaide.

The sanded neck was silky smooth and I thought the flower motif was tropical and cool.

I later saw a band in Singapore, where the guitarist was using one and it sounded great too. ( coincidentally thy did Bohemian Rhapsody from start to finish including the operatics ... very cool )

So I am definitely looking forward to seeing the new one.

It's funny you should mention that as I've thought about that possibility as well. And I concluded that it would pretty much only have a use (if any) whilst playing without distortion. I mean how on earth are you going to use that with a distorted tone? It'd just produce a horrible sound. So, I wouldn't be excited about that either. I mean it's an interesting idea but it's just not really usable. At least not that I can see.
