I wish it was that easy but this little chip

And the fact that you can see the woodgrain under the paint

tells me that theres no swirl under the blue.

Ido have a question for all original MC owners. Is there shielding paint on the cavities covering the swirl? As you can see in the last picture, I peeled some of the shilding paint from the tremolo back cavity and found some swirl "leftovers".

My ATDs have all had shielding paint, but the application was never consistent.

I have a question. Are you planning on trying to use the same paint brand used on the original swirl???

Re: The Jem ATD PMC Restore thread

I don't know what paint brand darren used and I remember reading a realy old thread when he was still posting here where he said he is mixing his paint from scratch to make sure they are always the same so theres not much I can do.
What I'm going to do is try to match the shades of the paints I'm using to the tiny bits of swirl that is still visible. The guy that mix the paint for me is very helpfull and always agree to go the extra mile.

Definately try to go for it man. At least your giving it it's true justice. Plus you know people here will help point you into the right direction and give you support.

Do some tests and post them =)

Re: The Jem ATD PMC Restore thread

Thanks guys, I'll definitely do some tests and show them here, this one must be perfect.
I have one more question, I checked the Jem production years chart over here: http://www.jemsite.com/jem/20-ibanez...art-years.html and saw that PMC were made in 92-93. The neck plate on this one say 916798 so it's a 91 right? also I checked Rich's gallery and all the PMCs had dark plates like the one on my BFP and this one is silver. Is it possible that all the black was worn off or maybe it's a plate from another Jem?

Re: The Jem ATD PMC Restore thread

I'm not Jem expert, far from it, but I remember reading in Rich's site I think, that sometimes an item was produced earlier than the actual year it was sold. So a 91' manufacture year doesn't sound that weird.

Of course, I could be wrong

Re: The Jem ATD PMC Restore thread

Could have been swirled and assembled in late '91 then released for sale in '92. And yeah, the black can wear off or be polished off leaving the plate silver.

Re: The Jem ATD PMC Restore thread

cool project!!!i think its easy.

1-send the body to a good swirler.
2-make the neck clean again.
3-put new hardware on it.trem tuners toplock screws(sell the rest)
4-maybe new pickups?
5-rewire it nice and clean.

its not that much work.it will cost some money and time.but its nice when its ready.
i dont see the problems?its a cool guitar.go for it!
show pictures!

Good luck with the swirl, if you're going to do it by yourself.

Tell us all about it! Make a video of the swirling!
