Steve Vai on the Jemfest website that's pretty imformative and Steve explains the story of how the JEM evolved for anyone like myself who didn't know. On the Jemfest site there is a link in the upper right hand corner for interviews with a lot of different artists, including this Vai interview. It's very imformative. The story of the JEM starts about 34 minutes into the interview. Have fun listening!
