This is what I get for rushing - Take your time

Yeah I was dying to replace my DBK cause I really was bummed because I had to part with it some time ago! About 2 months ago I buy a used VBK for 850.00 and man am I excited I'm going to own a Jem again. I get a JS700 around the same time and start playing that instead of the VBK. Finally get around to the Jem of course it needs setup, and suprisingly it's in dire(literally) need of new strings and a nice clean up job!! Finally get everything finished except the intonation cause I don't have the proper tools to do it. Then thats when I discover That my neck is twisted. Me being the jackass I am is already under the impression all Ebay sales are final so I just leave the Jem in the case waiting until I have enough money to fix the neck. Before this gets to long the point is the seller never mentioned the twisted neck right off. I can't even leave a negative feedback because the reserve had never been met. Also he has a 48 hour return policy that also never got mentioned. Finally contacted him thanks to Rich educating me on Ebay, and told him the same story but you guessed it "SOL" Anyway I think everyone gets the point. Also I wanted to mention the sellers name:

Ddfattee

How do I make that *really big so everyone notices :angryfire:

Once again we learn that you simply cannot be too careful when cruising around e(vil)Bay. It's a drag man, and I hope it works out...

Amateur chiming in here - what do we look for in a twisted neck? *I don't think I've ever come across one, but I find it hard to believe that all of the guitars I've owned have never had one. *

The only way I know I have a twisted neck is if there's a sharp pain.

Hold the body to your eye with the neck pointing away and sight the neck. It's very easy to see when the 24th fret and the nut are not parallel =

Rich,
Is that really an accurate method?

If so, all my guitars have a twisted neck. Even the 3120 and the DBK.

They play lickettysplit for being twisted.

Yup, unless you're crosseyed  Most guitars will show a very slight twist, very slight, maybe a degree or two. Scotts is showing 10 degrees or more and that was judging from a digi pic. There is a manufacturer today building guitars with twisted necks intentionally, go figure that one.

Nix what I just said after reconsidering what 2 degrees looks like! Anything under a degree is fine, anything over 2 would definately be considered 'twisted'.

Damn...

Unfortunately it seems the best way to learn a lesson is the hard way.

Sorry to hear it. *I hate ebay, but it's a necessary evil in many cases if you want to get your stuff sold at a decent price.

I'll post a pic soon for all to see! Question is do I sell when I get a new neck or keep! Not sure how much I could sell for and if I did I'm afraid I'm going to loose at least a few hundred!

Scott, unfortunately the evils of buying without seeing has struck again. It SUCKS!!! It is hard to trust anybody on e-bay or any other auction. Therefore we must ask all questions prior to bidding, and hope the seller answers truthfully. The majority of trading at these auctions is usually trustworthy. The omission of the twisted neck could have been intentional, or possibly the seller did not know about the defect. As far as selling, you already have $850 in the guitar, plus the cost to replace the neck. If you can locate a VBK neck, the combined costs would probably result in a loss of cash. Have you tried adjusting the truss rod? I know this will probably not work, but maybe it will relieve some tension. Years ago I had a friend that had the same problem with a Fender neck. He took it to a professional and somehow got it repaired.

No offense intended here, but in my experience 999 out of 1000 guitar players wouldn't know a "twisted neck" if they saw one. I repaired guitars for 10 years, and every time someone brought in a guitar and complained of a twisted neck, a simple truss rod adjustment or simple fret level took care of the problem. Only a couple of times did the neck ever have to be heat treated or the board re-planed so it was level. My point is that unless you know from experience (sighting 100s of necks and taking accurate measurements) how to sight a neck, it is very difficult to determine what is really going on. Please take it to a professional (or two) and let them tell you what's wrong before you replace a neck or do major repairs to one. Good luck.
