I agree, but there is the part where he deleted all his old posts that is a little strange don't you think?

The deleted posts are unrelated. He did that some time ago as part of a hissy fit over responses to the Hulk guitar threads.

But then why delete everything and not just ask a mod to delete all the hulk threads?

I am REALLY glad that I posted it on here... I knew you guys would set everything straight.

On a side note: there were alot of vintage Fenders going for $50,000+... I have a picture of a 50's Strat with a $69,500 price tag on it. I think he was betting on people thinking with their teabags and not their brains.

That's actually the going price for some vintage Fenders. Chances are they will only go up in value.

Its all about creating a market. Unfortunately one can go too far (either Rodney or the dealer).

Re: Thought this little Gem was interesting...

Really, the bottom line is that there needs to be some proof. Most of us know that Rodney thinks it is a prototype that was stolen off a truck after a show. A decade of sitting in a barn later, Rodney wins it on the bay and restores it. He says there are factory 500K pots on it, he has the body tested to see what kind of wood it is. I recall him once saying it was cocobolo (which, as I recall, he referred to as 'coco-boa') and then later saying it was solid maple. I think he never tried to verify if it was an actual prototype because he was afraid Vai would want it back.

Regardless, if he told the dealer this story and the dealer decided to believe it and sell it as such, then shame on the dealer. But I would certainly say that it is at the very very least quite unscrupulous, and probably closer to outright fraud to advertise a guitar to be something with no proof. So I would love to see some verification that it is a prototype beyond speculation. That price tag deserves solid proof. For all anyone really knows it could be a custom body that someone built and had Darren swirl because they couldn't get the wood they wanted/electronics they wanted, etc. Rich has had plenty of PMC necks (4 listed, one marked as sold at the moment, though that could be outdated ) and neckplates aren't that hard to come by.

There has absolutely GOT to be a way to prove once and for all if this guitar is or is not a prototype. Let's see if we can make that happen. Mikey from vai.com posts here occasionally, Tak Hosono from the custom shop posts here, Rich is a huge source of knowledge, etc, etc...

I think Rich has already confirmed the BS-ness of the story from his knowledge. Mikey can probably do the same.

If someone could get Vai to look at the guitar pics and make a statement, then there you go.

Rodney has posted in the forums since this thread was created. He should be aware of the issues here and could address them for us. Not doing so could lead to more speculation both postive and negative.

If that is the case then he is in posession of stolen goods and that in itself is a crime regardless of how he came to own it.

LOL, Steve wouldnt be caught dead with that crappy swirl (swirls are subjective, but that one, well...)

His PMC prototype is the one in the '92 catalog, this one doesnt even look ATDish, but i could be wrong on that... cant remember from Rodneys restoration thread pics (got them at home, im at work) if there were ATD marks on the neck pocket, but still, its weird...

Why Ibanez would make a prototype to try different woods and have Darren swirl it? thats ridiculous too...

Then theres the whole pile of bullcrap on top, like the cig burn to mark it as a good one when we know Steve swaps necks like most do underwear and doesnt smoke, the "VIA" on the tag...

Re: Thought this little Gem was interesting...

I don't really get it it...

Why burn a fretboard and risk being charged with some kind of fraud related offense to try to pass of this guitar as a prototype, something no one is going to believe, when he could have just fully restored it and put it on the bay? I'm not exactly in the loop on these things, but last I heard, any ATD swirl (if that's what it is), bad or good, was selling around 3-6K or even more? Or am I totally wrong?

Re: Thought this little Gem was interesting...

Nope.... not wrong at all. Maybe the guitar show swung nearby and he just had to give it a shot...? "it" being "selling it at a ridiculously high price"

That's speculation on my part totally unsubstantiated by any evidence at all.

Re: Thought this little Gem was interesting...

Anyone find it odd that Rodney hasn't posted anything in here, even after I gave him a little hint in another thread?

Anyways did he take a sample of the wood and send it to a lab to find out if it really was maple? Doubtful, I think he said he had a few wood experts look at it

Did he ever pull the neck to see what was stamped? I don't remember but I don't think he did.

If your so worried that this was a stolen guitar why put out in plain sight at a huge trade show?
