universe with a monkey grip

hey ppl
i was wondering why the universe were never ever made with a monkey grip
and the neck was always 1 piece maple ????????....(anything to do with sustain???) also, i would love all universe owners to share their views on how does it feel to play a 7-string and opine on whether it is different or difficult to play than a regular 6 string ...i was thinking of making a custom universe and came to know it had the same dimensions as the jem although that would mean the neck dimensions being same the strings would be a tad closer .......is it really so and if it is does it affect playability??can the universe be converted to a 6-string when needed (like ..by just switching off the last (0th) string pickups and taking off the string???)...opinions & views invited

Re: universe with a monkey grip

A 7 string neck is wider than a 6 but the body usually stays the same shape but with a bigger neck pocket, other people know the whole story but I think it was to separate the two guitars so the UV wouldnt just be 'a 7 string JEM'.

Thumbs down

Re: universe with a monkey grip

The only Ibanez produced UV with a money grip is the original UVMC that SSV plays on PAW. And it had a MG because somebody at Ibanez had a MG routed into the body before shipping it to ATD to be swirled.

Now, I was tempted to have an MG done on my UV, but there is not really space enough to have the MG done like it's supposed to be. The extra string on the UV eats up the space necessary for a proper JEM-like MG routing.

I don't know about custom bodies though, they might take the 7th string into account.

Regards,

JP

It was a friend of Steve that did the MG.

Re: universe with a monkey grip

I'm not sure where i got this info and it could be completely wrong, but i *think* it had something to do with Joe Despagni having some sort of copyright ont he monkey grip and they wanted to cut him out of the equation on the UV, since he hadn't been involved for a few years at that point.

Kenny's pretty close on that one. Information can be found under the Jem & Universe section of Jemsite under the specs link. Darren talks a bit about this during his story about the swirling the MC's in the early years.

No it can't, the 7th string is just an extra 5 notes below the low E without having to downtune and loose notes at the top of the scale.

Re: universe with a monkey grip

Wow! That was informative. I asked that question about the Jem features on the UV's on another thread a few weeks ago.........but got no satisfactory answers. I was curious why they didnt offer up stock UV's with those features. Custom builders dont seem to have a problem building em. Anyway....... thanks for the info guys!
Laterz!....................~Ranz~

P.S. Jemaholic?..........I actually have a pic of the gorgoues UV on my screen saver here at work. Its the pic of it sitting outside next to a yellow 6 string. Extremely beautiful guitar bro............

That's a great pic - the purple flowers really set off both guitars, don't they?
