UV songs that Steve now plays on a JEM - Which ones were ori

Hi All,

Seeing the thread about the G3 verson of the tab to For the Love of God made me start wondering how many other songs Steve had originally performed on a Universe but is now playing on a six string.

FTLOG is one that I never considered would have been a Universe song. I haven't studied it closely, but I don't recall many very low notes in there. Yes, I know the B string isn't just for LOW notes, but you know what I mean. *

It wasn't until wandering around the vai.com site recently and finding the picture of the white UV that was used to record FTLOG that I even knew he recorded it with a UV.

So, back to the original question... *how many other songs do you know of that he's switched from a UV to a JEM? *You can debate WHY he would do that if YOU want to, but I'm just interested in how MANY of them there are.

Bill

Switching back to 6-string from 7 seems to be a trend now days. In Steve’s case I think it may be the slightly superior tone of the Jems or convenience when playing live. *Others just don’t like the wider neck as much. *Whatever the reason, it is a curious occurrence that seems to be happening more frequently of late… and it’s scarring me.

it's been said many many times before

Steve doesn't play UV's live because of the extra space needed for the UV's on tour. Dave and tony have 7 strings and can take care of the low end stuff.

Steve told us this during the EVO experience on this last tour . Has nothing to do with tone of Jems being superior or not.

Steve still plays UV's in the studio and also has a emerald 7 string acoustic too.

alot of the passion and warfare stuff was played on a 7str. How does he do the animal live with just 6strings, as he does on the astoria ? same with the audience is listening. Would it really be to much trouble to bring 2 UVs on the road ?

Tha Animal is done on a 6 string. He uses pitch shifter to get the low ,I think 5th, that gives it it's low tone. He did it this way because it's easier to bend one string than it is to bend a power chord.

Not a pitch shifter it's his good old Eventide Harmonizer 3000.

On the G3 live in Tokyo he plays The Audience is Listening on a 6 string, when it was originally recorded on the UV. Instead of playing the low power chord with the B string, he just played it one octave up.

FTLOG was recorded with a JEM. I actually read that the other day somewhere because I had always wondered that.

Also, his first ever, and every one since, performance of that song live have been on a JEM... even in the times that he still used the 7s on stage. The place I read that also mentioned that the entire Whitesnake album was recorded on the 7.

WEAK!!!! anywho, even if Vai thought it was a passing thing its certainly not a flash in the pan.... there will always be a place for 7s. *cough* sevenstring.org *cough* has a great community of sevenstringers.

Christopher, that's a good point. *I believe he used a UV on some songs on the Fire Garden tour, but I don't remember seeing him use a seven stringer during the Ultra Zone show that I attended.

Hmmmm... * *

UV songs that Steve now plays on a JEM

Did you guys ever notice that Steve Vai does some crazy retorts in his songs?
Sometimes i listen to them and all of a sudden i realize that he is playing a lick from one of his own songs and contorting it. Im probably the last person to notice this, but hey give me a break this site turned me on to Vai.

Some examples are the Attitude Song. Which contains parts of the battle in Crossroads. Then Touching Tounges (i think is the name of it) it seems to have a flash back to pices of For the Love of God. Then one of the new songs on The Seventh Song seems to flash back to one on Ultra Zone.

Just Food For Thought
