UV7BK in Australia

Hi all, I hope this is the right place for this, so here goes:-

I'm after some help from a fellow Aussie on how much I should pay for a UV7BK (green dot). The bridge seems to have some slight rust, and the pickguard is slighly scratched through playing, but it seems in excellent condition apart from that. The guy is a first owner and he says its been hardly played for years

He wants AU$1850 for it, and my highest offer thus far has been $1500. I have a friend that owns 17 Universes including swirls, whites, UV7BK green & silver dots - and he said not to pay any more than AU$1400

I've wanted one of these guitars for about 12 years now, so I'm thinking that my massive 'want' factor is clouding my judgement. I know that a mint one would sell for US$900, and with shipping etc I would think that'd be about AU$1400. But is $1850 way too much?

What do you think? Should I end my search and buy it? Anyone from Australia bought one from the US - what did you pay inc all taxes + shipping etc?

I'm going to Europe in July/August - maybe I should wait till then and try my luck?

Somebody slap me!

That's about $500 more than the price you should pay. But if you are desperate enough and can live with losing that much money, then I don't see the problem.

The prices here in europe are even higher for UV's and JEM's and goes for new and used ones.

Re: UV7BK in Australia

Thanks for your replies guys. I've decided that I want it bad enough and am prepared to pay for it. He sent me some new pics yesterday and it looks in excellent condition - I'd say mint condition except for the pick guard screws which are slightly rusty.

I don't want to look back wishing I had just spent the few extra hundred bucks when I had the chance. Besides - I just got paid for the 30 hours overtime I've done in the last few weeks.

I'll post some pics once I get it! Can't wait to own a Universe - and I've loved the black/green one ever since I saw it in that Dream Theatre clip!

Mate, do not get ripped on this thing.

It is a nice guitar but by far one of the most ordinary UV's around.

I would cool down and keep a level head. I bought my UVMC for $1500 9 years ago so I know you can get a UV for $1500 easy.

If you want one that bad, ring around some of the music stores around your city and even in some of the other major cities.

Re: UV7BK in Australia

There aren't many Universes for sale in Sydney (or Australian for that matter) shops right now - Downtown in Camperdown have an MKR UVMC in player cond for $9995AUD, Guitar Crazy has a UV777BK which was used in some vampire flick for $4995 ...... ummmm, when you think about it, around $1500AUD is a bit of a bargain in comparison! - I bought a lovely ATD UVMC from Canada for about $2000USD - by the time I had her here she'd cost me around $4000AUD - beware - exchange rate, shipping and customs/duty will quickly turn a bargain into a reasonably expensive proposition!

Re: UV7BK in Australia

Oh, yeah - FYI - shipping by USPS (effectively FEDEX) will cost around $400AUD from US or Canada - you pay 5% duty on anything over $1000AUD, and 10% GST on the purchase price, shipping and insurance cost combined - so you can pretty much work out what the end cost is going to be - don't forget about exchange rates, and if you buy on DevilBay and pay with PayPal you also pay I think a 2 - 2.5% currency exchange transaction fee - I'd advise you to keep your eyes on BeelzebubBay.com.au and see if one comes up - they do - a UVPW sold in Melbourne for about $1850 not so long ago.

I did have a look at that. Even though I know Rich's setups alone are worth the money, by the time I bought a case, and ship it to Australia I think it would cost me much more. Let alone customs tax as well.

Hi David
Thanks alot for that. I've seriously been looking for an older Universe for ages, and the only ones I've seen have been trashed and way overpriced. I thought about getting one via the net but I just think it would cost me more. If I had have been interested in doing that I would have bought one ages ago.

Man - I gotta go see that UVMC at Downtown! I wouldn't pay that much, but I haven't seen a MC in person for years!

I want your MC! I'll give you $1500

Thanks for your input, I do realise it's probably a little steep but I've been looking for a long time. Thing is; if I pass it up I know I'll kick myself for letting it slide because of a few hundred bucks.

Well, if anyone has a Universe in Australia they'd like to offload asap, PM me real quick! Ha Ha Ha

There are more worth over $10K than you think, but, a MKR UV isn't one of them, unless it's one of SV's..

Re: UV7BK in Australia

I have nothing against a dealer trying to make money on an item. That's business, but to try and scalp someone of $10,000 for a UV is bordering on criminal in my book.

dysfctn, If I was selling my UV you would be the first to know. Unfortunately I'm not in need of money or wish to sell my guitars. Sorry mate. Maybe I will in the near future.

I'm not one to hang on to gear beacuse I am obsessed with owning something. To me it is a tool. If it isn't serving it's purpose it gets sold.

I do have a Fender Prosonic head that I could sell if you want bone crushing distortion from a small two channel head. I have 2 of them and 1 is a back up but has never had to be used.
