Re: Vai Universe Riffs?

The answer has already pretty much been said. If you watch Weiner's parts in any of the DVD's they're the good 7 String riffing.

The start of Erotic Nightmares is a good one.

Cheers,
Shane

Here's another one that I forgot to mention and have you ever given thought to?? How about some John Petrucci. He's used the 7 string alot in the past, probably alot more than Vai ever did(when it comes to heavy rhythms).

Re: Vai Universe Riffs?

I disagree totally that he only used the 7 string for rhythm. Here's a couple of 7 string songs. "The Audience is Listening". In later years when he performed this song he arranged it for 6 string guitar but it was played and recorded on a 7 string.

Kill The Guy With The Ball / Yo Yo Gak was also recorded with a 7 string.

Yes! Petrucci has some GREAT 7-string riffs. For example:
A Change Of Seasons
The Mirror
Caught In A Web
The Glass Prison
The Dark Eternal Night

Search YouTube, and be amazed.

But of course, he'd give up Evo for a second to play a 7 string if it wasn't more stiffer to do lazy trem tricks....

I don't think, a small matter of a quarter of a century after Flex-able, that Steve Vai is "trying" to be anything. He is what he is.

So much so that just about anyone who's heard it once can sing it.

That's my definition of a riff!

Steve Vai songs with an immediately recognizable 7 string riff: The Animal and Bad Horsie
the animal yes!!
the small dragging on the b ounds awesome in the middle, just as acoustic comes in!

but NOT on bad horsie!!! noooooo
he tunes to drop C ala Killswitch engage, job for a cowboy and children of bodom.

tune a whole tone down and drop that sh!t!!!
but its mass myth on bad horsie, everyone seems to think its C# where as its not.

I'd also like to add:

Lie
This Dying Soul
The Dance of Eternity
Tunnel Vison
A Nightmare to Remember

JP went even more epic win earlier this year, when he tuned the 7 down to A, for the Raw Dog instrumental!

Mikey, do you happen to know which model Universe Steve used on 'Oooo'? As we all know, the booklet shot features a UV777BK (I wanted one so bad after that, but never thought I would ever actually get one 8 years later!) which was new at the time, but that doesn't mean it was used on the recording.

Like to correct that, A nightmare to remember was played on his tuned down 6 strings.

Re: Vai Universe Riffs?

I recently fell in love with a part of "Building the Church"'s backing track. There is a short part where he plays a B cord over pretty much all of the 7 strings incl. open B, followed by C maj/C5 (?). Dunno why, but that part just resonates wonderfully, on pretty much any guitar I've played it on (I only have 6-strings), sort of like a perfectly balanced frequency range for guitar .

Um, who says you can't solo on the low B?
