What constitutes a "good" swirl ??

I have three swirls in the collection right now, and they all suit me just fine, but I know there are people out there who look for certain things. Is it the number of veins of color, the proper mixture, or what? I mean it seems like the bloodier the DNA the more it is worth, but mine has a lot of all the colors. What about the other swirls?? Just looking for opinions here.

A swirl is really like buying speakers. Sure, they sound different, but its all down to what you like as a listener, and everyone is different.

I will admit that it'd be tough to argue super famous swirls, like most of Steve's collection (I actually don't think he has a swirled guitar anyone on Jemsite would call 'bad'), but if you love your swirl, don't let anyone tell you differently.

Me, I like plenty of variation, not necessarily that straight 'wave' effect in swirls that can be common, but plenty of micro stuff along with the smooth waves.

I've found that my favorite swirls have certain things in common. For one, the colors have to be in reasonably good proportion relative to each other. There's nothing I hate more than seeing a UVMC with nothing but yellow and green on it, or something like that. Also, I'm the type of person who prefers a darker swirl, with more black in it. Also, I think it's good to see the colors "mingling" well, that is to say, all the colors are all over the guitar. There's not a yellow part of the guitar, and a pink part, and so on, and so forth, and such and such, and yadda yadda, etc. Anyway, I'm not sure exactly how they prep a guitar for a swirl, if it's just natural wood beforehand, but I think it'd be neat to see one that is finished entirely in black, then swirled in 3 or 4 other colors, so you have a nice amount of black to offset all the colors. I apologize, I'm babbling again.

Good swirls are in the eye of the beholder and it's pretty easy to judge.

1st swirl "Hey, that looks cool"
2nd swirl "Gags"

Different levels of "good" are also in the eye of the beholder.

1st swirl "Hey, that looks cool"
2nd swirl "Damn, that looks so much better than the other one"
3rd swirl "I think I just wet my pants!"

Of course some of this is relative to the genome. There will be way more really good DNA's than there are PMC's, at least from what I've seen, although there will be those of any type I just don't like at all. I use the same scale for the bad ones.

1st swirl "Gags"
2nd swirl "That pizza tasted alot better on the way down!"

YMMV

[swirls need to be on white to get any refraction from the pigment. Unless the desired effect is a more subtle swirl, look at some of Hercs trans swirls. All Ibanez swirls are on white primer.]

Can i add,This is my fave swirl...I've seen some lovely one's,Simons BMC as just 1 example,One of Rich's DNA's i saw took my breath away .. But this one just does something for me,i cannot explain it at all in words

I know some don't like it,Some positively hate it,There is just something I love about it I rate it a 10 my freind hates it with a passion and would rate -3 lol

It's all subjective because it *IS* an artform

thanks Rob

I like mine and the GMC Steve Vai used at Seville in 92, Bob Oakman's UVMC, and there are a few more which I can remember right now

For me a good swirl is:
A good mix of colour
A good blend of colours
and a good pattern

all of which are all subjective!!

Argh! GMC!! Gimme Gimme!!

And yes I'm with Simon with regards to the GMC swirl from the Seville 92 concert. Tis the root cause of my GMC fetish!

Cheers
Mark.

Simon,That BMC is the whole reason i changed the idea of my Blue Jem(now the DPV) but she's a sweet axe :-)

I'm gonna have to meet you guys at some point, just think Jemfest will be a no go...A whole lotta healin needed

I'm thinking if i get my arse off the sofa a bit more, and get cracking on my swirling,I'll do my old natural in GMC (as long as Darren J does'nt mind) best to mail and ask i guess...I'm stuck on who to help out with a vine tho

Regards

Rob

...Eye of the beholder...

Personally, I don't like too much black in a swirl. Simon's BMC is THE BEST swirl I have ever seen!
