Re: What does everyone think about this True Temperment necks that Vai talks about
It looks like crap, but that doesnt mean its a bad thing.
Its pretty impractical in most cases, but if it sounds better and closer to key when playing alongside instruments tuned in the same ways then that can only be a good thing right?
Although id think the tolerances they talk about are inaudable to our ears, but atleast our pets wont start crying when we play

I read more and came to this, which is pretty obvious physics.
Quote:
The frequency of a vibrating string is determined by three factors: the speaking length, its mass, and the tension applied.
I mite be wrong but doesnt that mean you can only have 1 string gauge, tuned to 1 tuning on the guitar that the neck is mounted too, or it wont work?
As soon as you changed tuning, the tension in the strings would be different and the points where each fret bends would have to move, which wouldn't happen.
Also you would have to press on the string with the exact pressure they set it too every time, otherwise the frequency would be different?

Now correct me if I'm wrong, but pianos are not in perfect tuning, ever. They get it in as close as possible in the middle, then as they go out, the compensate for the change in pitch. So a really high A sounds much different that a really low A.
I don't know if that's what it's called, tempered, but the guitar is fine the way it is. I like the fact that it's not perfect.

You have just realized the concept.
The exact reason why each individual fret is compensated (instead of just a single compensation at the nut or in intonation) is because of the difference when you fret. String gauge has also been considered, as their set-up specifies which gauges they have currently included in their research.
There is actual research behind this, not just a wild "what the h*ll can we do that's really weird-lookin..." idea

I must concede this *possibility* of this point out of fairness. At least someone is doing research and development to try and further the instrument. It is still arguable as to whether or not this *is* and advance though. It's at least an advance in knowledge through experimentation though.
I have noticed sometimes that notes don't hit right on when others are playing in a band situation. Most of the time it's because either their axe is out of tune or the intonation is crappy. Sometimes it's because you can hear it. The general population who is the audience cannot.

Crap of the season, same as the fretwave 555 neck, the gearless tuners, the sustainer (that one stuck, tho) and every other stuff he endorses sometimes...
might be great for him now, eventually the honeymoon will end for practical reasons, and thats that...

Re: What does everyone think about this True Temperment necks that Vai talks about
I put the $35 Earvana nut on my Charvel (actually, I had
Norio Imai
do it), and it does make a nice difference for the three songs I play where I actually strum open chords.
Other than that though, a little distortion equals it all out anyway.

I guess it would be good if you played everything in the same key which to me would sound sterile. Again its an interesting concept but its more limiting.

piano's do use tempered tuning. Trust me my dad is a pretty big piano tech in Naples, he is the only tuner at the philharmonic, he tuned for Alicia Keys at the VMA's, he has also gone to california and worked with Yamaha techs

Re: What does everyone think about this True Temperment necks that Vai talks about
the average ear isn't going to hear a difference between a
standard neck
and a "tempered" neck. This is pretty much just for Eric Johnson/OCD type
guitar players
that need everything perfect
