What wood is this Jem?
Just bought a new
Jem
body and not sure what the
wood
is. Can someone please tell me? Either 3 or 4 piece.

By the colour and weight I thought
maple
or alder, I am not sure though.

I see 4 pieces, too.
Impossible to tell the wood from pics.
What's the weight?
Where did you get it?

Re: What wood is this Jem?
I got it on the Internet, not sure of the site. Seller specified maple or alder too. Weighs about 4-5 lbs.

Do you still have your email receipt?
Might be able to track down the vendor with it.

Re: What wood is this Jem?
judging by the fact there's no lion claw, and the spring cavity isnt done properly I'm guessin this is a cheapy...so they may have fobbed ya off with something like spruce or pine!

Ever seen some of Nate Pearle's bodies?
He doesn't put a lion"s claw on some.
Pine doesn't have a grain like that at all.

Re: What wood is this Jem?
That, I'm sorry to say, does not look like a good body. The swimming pool pickup cavity is bigger than I've seen (and looks deeper than necessary). The spring cavity is not cut well. The trem cavity looks dodgy. Overall, the placement of the cavities looks off. I'm actually counting 5 if the upper (arm rest) inch or two is a 5th.
I'd return that and just ask for a body blank in return.
Edit: looks more like basswood than alder

Spruce would be a potential upgrade from basswood. Personal preferences and all that, sure. Spruce is soft, but it's not at all a bad wood for guitars. Pine has been used with success too, but I would think it would have a lot more eyes if it was pine.
Also, I see 5 pieces, not that it matters, I can't say what kind of wood it is anyway.

I only mentioned as just the other day I grabbed a veeeery cheap playtech strat to try out some luthiering skills on. It was 6000 yen and the body apparently made of spruce (if that's what "waito-uddo" turns out to be). Doesn't sound bad at all really, just assumed that it must be a cheap wood.

Fair enough, though I browse his site and auctions pretty often and personally haven't seen a monkey-grip body without the claw. Definately never seen him do a body with a half arsed spring cavity like that.

I haven't owned any pine furniture for quite some time, so forgive me on that one lol.

Re: What wood is this Jem?
Looks like a mutt, I don't think it is one type of wood alone, and the cavity geometry seems off. I hope you didn't pay very much....
