Whats the deal with the handle?

I just want to know what you guys think of the handle? I personally don't see a point in having it. What function does it serve?

You use it to hold the guitar with. That's the function of a handle, if I'm correct.

what else?

i mean, the thing is, once you get used to having it there, you miss not having it in other guitars ..

So true! You get very used to holding the guitar with the handle rather than the neck... I like the handle.

If you've seen Steve play his JEMS's in the early days (DLR), he used it a lot...throwing, swinging, holding the guitar stable while doing some crazy left hand techniques, etc. ;-)

The monkey grip comes very handy, when you wanna do some guitar stunts, like holding it when you unlock your quick-lock strap

Plus, if the guitar's liying on the floor on the case for example you can pick it up very easily .
But it's true that you miss it on other guitars. I'm gonna get a Wolfgang and I test-played it already a few times and every time I wanna put it away I automatically reach for the grip...

And you love it! I've read some of your posts.....

It's true, though, about missing the grip on other guitars

Altough it may serve to hold the guitar, I think it's more of a 'style stamp'. Remember, this guitar came from the 80's!

The official story I read somewhere is that SSV once was running somewhere with his guitar and it fell, so he proposed to himself to have a guitar with a handle someday.

I know this is stupid, but I was dissapointed to see SSV holding the guitar by the horn in the legato part of 'Tender Surrender', in the ALS video.

Rich Lasner who is in charge of Ibanez artist relations, product development and marketing during the Jem's development said "The monkey monkey grip purpose was to allow Steve to hold the guitar over his head with one hand while doing hammer-ons with the other".

But it also makes the guitar very easily spotted, and no copies from other brands can really 'look' the same.
