Which UV is for me???
Hi all!!!
Just want some opinions on which UV would work best for me because its time for me to get a Universe i have so long been craving for.
The style of music I play is progressive thrash and i guess i would like to know if there is any difference in the old UV7BK and the new universes on the market(tone wise)
Now im pretty partial to the uv7bk because i like the simple style (..and i like black guitars). Can someone please help me before i hand over my hard earned cash so i know its the model i should be getting!!
Big cheers in advance

So tone wise they're pretty even across the board?

Re: Which UV is for me???
The tone is quite a bit different from the early 90's UV7BK to the newer UV777BK, the feel is also quite different, old UV's typically have thinner neck profiles, the new UV777BK's are thick with the binding, old UV have more of a growl and attitude to them, and can vary quite a bit from one guitar to the next, the new ones are much more controlled sounding, balanced and more consistent from one to another, it's a preference between the 2 worlds.

Re: Which UV is for me???
Thanks guys...attitude and growls are exactly what im after
I also heard that the older uv's tend to weigh a little more...not that its a concern...but i guess it stands to reason that it will add a little more tonally. Also do uv's tend to have that infamous crack at the
neck joint
(AANJ that is)??
Cheers

Hi,
I have a '97 UV7BK, and it is my favorite axe with a distance.
I'm very happy with it. It sounds and plays awesome.

JP

Re: Which UV is for me???
The older UV necks are very thin compared to the new ones plus the UV777GR has
maple fretboard
.

That weight part is probably true...my UV777PBK is really light, I never would have guessed it.

Re: Which UV is for me???
Hard to say what the tone will be by weight alone, it also depends on the wood itself (of course pickups vary, and much of the tone of an
electric guitar
is the wood in the neck & fretboard) I had a UV777BK that was light, and sounded great, and I have had a light UV7BK that sound sweet, yet a light one that was extremely weak, Typically with Basswood from what I have found, the heavy ones can sound thicker & sustain more, my son has the "Hulk" UV7BK, and it is the heaviest Universe I have even seen, and it sounds insane!
JP, the 97 UV7BK is a cool Universe! Nice and low profile image.

Yeah, the UV's still obtain the neck pocket finish crack.

Re: Which UV is for me???
I've owned a UV77MC, UV7PWH, and a UV7BK, all from the early '90s. If you want my advice, buy 2 rg7620s instead. Odds are you won't use the middle single coil for your style of music (hell, I only used mine for funky clean tones), and for the price of one UV7BK you can get at least 2 7620s. Both are made from the same materials, and come from Japan.
Now, I say at least 2 7620s because people are gettin awful proud of their UVs lately. I'm guessing you could probably buy 3 or 4 7620s for the price of one UV.
Do yourself a favor and try each one before you buy. My 7620 plays and sounds better than any of my Universes did, and I'm not paranoid all the time about theft, scratches, whatever.

Old one, get the UV7BK but with the green dots.
That's and amazing guitar, very agressive profile!

Re: Which UV is for me???
IMHO the UV77GR is the best sounding 7 string guitar Ibanez made (havent tried the 7 string J customs though). To my ears, the UV77GR sounds brigther and clearer than the other UVs, the K7, 540S7, RG2027, early RG7 and the 7620.
I ve owned 2 UV777BK, 2 UV77MC, UV77GR, RG2027 and the 540S7.
This said, finding a UV77GR is going to be hard since there are only 340 made. If you do come across one and you can get it for a reasonable price, I would definately give it a try.
If you can find a very good deal (below USD500-650) the 7620s are definately worth it, and a used and affordable K7 is also worth checking out.
