Re: Who will build their Jem's after the Competition?

If I had the money I'd definately build my JEM! I just finished with school and before I'm going to university I'll work a little here and there to get some money.

Yeah--I'm torn between them. I like the print of the blue, but like the colors of the blue/green. I might do the blue print, but in purple.

I might airbrush this just for a challenge after I learn how to use my new airbrush pretty good, unless I can figure out exactly how to do my gold jem design.

I'm no artist, but your design immediately struck me as a woodcut. No idea how you'd do that yourself, other than scalloping out the wood by hand?
wow, I wish it were you voting LOL..... I can only hope that Steve thinks the same way, but there'll be a buttload of designs to pour through so I'd be lucky if he even looks at it personally. Part of me is wishing I had've took the time to do a back for it but the template didn't allow the edge to be done so I couldnt see how I'd carry on the design to wrap right around. If I build my own though it will definately be done that way.

I wish to constuct mine (the "Magic" JEM with OLEDs) but don´t have the money to do it by myself. But I can try to make this guitar if the Company that I´ve been working for help me to do it ( I have to convince some people) or to try to develop it as a Concept Product with some OLED companies or even Academy. Easy to Ibanez do it but hard to me to construct my design.

Yeah Macka it's my design I'll post it in the other thread, it started out as an Idea to have a textured lava flow look but I ended up with this for the horse part took me ages to figure out how to do it, I was thinking Bad Horsie but I didn't just want some cartoon horse with a funny face or steve vais superimposed face for that matter. I only done 3 designs after plans on doing dozens, I feel I was a bit lazy to be honest.

Re: Who will build their Jem's after the Competition?

Have started to fiddle around with the creation of my design. This was done on a really crap piece of wood. I took a small portion of my design as a test piece and painted it onto the wood. Undercoated wood, covered in blue painters tape, glued my design on top, cut and peeled out the design with a scalpel, sprayed with black metallic acrylic paint, peeled off the rest of the tape and clearcoated (all very roughly of course)..... I'm just trying to find out if I'm capable of pulling this off myself and building my own guitar. So far so good but there's still a lot of hurdles to get over yet but it's a start. Having a bit of trouble with the tape leaving sticky residues behind so I may need to use a less adhesive version of the tape.

this is using 6Fingers' suggestion of printing out the design and glueing it to the wood and clearcoating it. Although a nice and quick method with pretty good results, it still kinda looks a bit cheap as you can see the feathering around the edges of the graphics from the inkjet printer and the fact that my design was drawn with sharpies on normal printer paper, which is kinda silly now in hindsight. I could trace it all again on some quality paper but for some reason I like the hand cut design in the previous post even though it's a monu-f**king-mental job to take on. Don't know what to do but at least with the hand cut design I'll be able to continue the design around the back of the guitar body.

The grey undercoat on that first pic is only because I didn't buy any white so the guitar in the end won't be a grey design but black and white, as a test piece though it's sufficient.

Re: Who will build their Jem's after the Competition?

Been fooling around with painting and finishing etc.... on a number 7 that I found in the hardware store.... yes a 7..... It's a bit furry and there was a few muckups as it's made of cardboard and I cut a little too deep in some places and pulled up some of the surface in some areas. Will get some quality wood next and the paint i'll use for the real thing and try a proper last test before I go ahead with the "Build a Jem Project"

also changed up my design a bit from the original. Changed the vine to the sharktooth inlay on the Wizard II neck as it suits the pattern design a whole lot better and removed all the lines from Vai's face which, in my opinion, makes it pop a whole lot more. Let me know if you agree......

Here's the original......

Here's the modified.....

..... not to mention it'll be a hell of a lot easier to cut it out on the mask on the body without all the lines on his face from the previous version.

I decided to change the pattern on the neck after someone's suggestion that the vine takes away the focus on the body and makes it look too busy. I tend to agree with that and now wish I'd submitted the modified design in the contest. Oh well.......

Re: Who will build their Jem's after the Competition?

I definatly like the sharktooths more (pyramids would be best! ), however I think I like the original body design with the lines on Steves face more. The second may be easier and more practical for you to build, but I like the first one based on looks, I actually like how he blends in more.
