Question

Will it be a good idea to...

...put some black oil dye on my rosewood fretboard?
Has someone done it already? (pics please )
I love the look of ebony fretboards...will I ruin something?

And do you know where I can buy some oil dye in Europe?

Lemon oil or bore oil only please. People will argue over which, but I feel either will do a good job of replenishing oils in the fretboard. Use a very small amount.

And good grief, no, don't use any dye.

I agree. I see no point in doing so, except for looks. No offense but, if you wanted ebony, then get a new neck or replace the fretboard.

The lemon oil/bore oil will darken the fretboard a good bit without the need for dye.

Re: Will it be a good idea to...

IF you REALLY want to do that go to stewmac.com, order fretboard dye and you'l be set. I prefer ebony too, but when I have rosewood I keep it the way it's supposed to be. I'm not into faux ebony, or anything imitation. It doesn't look like ebony anyways. Ebony is silky tight, Rosewood is porous. I prefer my rosewood to be itself. IMHO a person who tries to make Rosewood or maple (yes I've seen that done before too, ew) into ebony is someone who should be buying Chibanez's instead, fake is fake.

Precisely. Leave the neck finish AS IS and put some bore oil on it.

Yeah, don't dye it, just oil it up. It will be much darker, yet still look like rosewood.

Re: Will it be a good idea to...

Lots of people dye their rosewood fretboards black. Ibanez did it themselves in the 70's on some of their archtops as well. I like a nice figured piece of rosewood myself, but there's a tutorial on doing the staining right on projectguitar.com
If you want to do it knock yourself out. Sometimes it definitely improves the guitar's look. It would probably improve the look of at least half of the UV777PBKs ever made
