Your JEM7vwh mods & why

I Just finished up making some simple mods to my JEM7vwh and wanted to see what others had done and why. I bought my JEM for it's playability not it's orig. appearance. So I changed mine for two reasons... one, being the hardware. I think that gold hardware is too hard to maintain over a period of years and for my taste it was just too much "bling"! So I replaced all the hardware with powder cosmo and so far like it maintenance wise! The other changes were just simply for cosmetics other than dropping in a EVO2 in the bridge position. I did that based on threads I had read here and suggestions from Mike Z. @ Mikes Music shop. (Best DiMarzio supplier I've found) I was looking to keep the tone of the original EVO but was looking for something with a little less output and cleaned up well when the volume was rolled back.
The pick guard change was based on the abalone used in the vine inlay.... it has lots of green and blue. With that change I just had to change bobbin colors too along with the knobs and switch tip. Hope you enjoy and look forward to seeing other pic's of your ideas. By the way.... does anybody know where I can get the dark blue knobs? I see Rich has one set.... but fifty bucks? I can live with the light blue if that's the going rate! Also looking for truss cover screws in black.

Here's pic's links.... hope I did this right.

Re: Your JEM7vwh mods & why

That does look nice. But if you wanted it for playablity, you certainly went the expensive route. Should have gone for an RG550, which is the same to play (people who own RG550s and Jem7s know this is true) and modded that.

Re: Your JEM7vwh mods & why

Not too shabby. Steward Macdonald carries the screws but only in gold or chrome. stewmac.com part number 0743. A nifty trick that works well is a dab of black fingernail polish. It is about the only paint that'll stick to the metal. Another trick for those reading that will take some of the edge off the tone is to swap the pots with 250K ohm pots. They attenuate some of the higher frequencies off to ground. I know in one interview i read from steve in about 1996 he said he was about to change the pots in EVO but i am unsure if he ever did. Hope this is somewhat helpful in your search.

Wouldn't they have different fret sizes?

Thanks for the input.... I have a RG1570 that I'm modifying too. I'm pretty sure it has different fret wire. I'll post pic's when it's done.

I don't like what you did, I think it looks horrible. But that's your thing as long as you like it that's all that matters.

Thumbs down

Re: Your JEM7vwh mods & why

He took all the class away from it by stripping it out of the gold hardware!, and to make it worse the choice of color in the pickups, knobs and pickguard was quite distasteful!!! To each their own I guess...?!?
