(?)Putting EMGs in my Prestige guitars.

Well, I've been using EMGs in my other hi-end guitars and really like the sound for what I play. However, I've been shying away from installing them in my RGT320 and RGT220A(20061) and 20063(when it arrives). I guess it's a mental thing. I can't bring myself to do it since I'm use to seeing them with DiMarzios and chipping away at the cavity is also going through my head. Is there alot of cavity removal necessary? Maybe I should just get over it and do it? Any help?

I'm a pretty big EMG fan. If you can't live without them, I say put them in. Some people (like a friend of mine) just love a certain thing ang put them in everything.

But recently, I got someone to make me a Seymour Duncan JB/Custom 5 hybrid, and I'm in love with it. I put it in a guitar I would normally have thrown EMG's in, and it really hangs with an 81.

It might be a longshot, but check these things out. The hybrid Duncan's are the best pickups I've heard in quite a while.

ibanez guitars do not require any routing for 6 string emgs the cavity is big enough to fit a 9volt in

im a fellow emg'er im putting 707s in my rg1527 which reuires routing for the larger 7 string emgs

I'll look into the Hybrid's. I've used Duncan JB's/Jazz for a while, they're great pu's and I've been using DiMarzio Tone Zone & Air Norton's for a while too but left both for EMGs for about a year now. Since I've been back into Ibanez(past few months thanks to my RGT's), I've been using DiMarzio's. I still like the clarity of the EMGS but IMO they lack in pick attack and low end growl where the DiMarzio's soar. I like hearing the tone wood with the passive pu's but there are those times where I like them to sound the same.

I thought the bottom of the cavity had to be taken down or the pu's(or at least one of them) would hit the strings. This is what I've been told.

Perhaps, but the rectangular shape and slightly increased posterior dimensions of the pickup requires you to route the pickup cavities.

When I get my hands on a RG550, I'll probably be replacing the pickguard with a H/H one, I don't suppose the middle pickup cavity is deep enough to hold a 9V battery?

No routing required for my USA Custom's.

Re: (?)Putting EMGs in my Prestige guitars.

there shouldn't be any routing for putting the pickups in. routing is only for the 7 string emg because it fits in a bass pickup case. The only routing that should be considered is routing for the battery, and that's optional, you can usually stuff a battery in any guitar.

Re: (?)Putting EMGs in my Prestige guitars.

not true.. i was with my friend when he routed his rga121 to allow emg's. He had to rout the bottom of the cavity and the corners to allow the emg to drop in. 81/85 combo. both cavities had to be modified.

Jimbo, those are some beautiful guitars man!

+1
Wanted to put a pair of EMG89s into my RGA121 some time ago, but they didn't fit into the cavities and I didn't want to do some serious woodwork. Had to return the EMGs

Re: (?)Putting EMGs in my Prestige guitars.

Isnt it possible to just modify the emg pickup to make it fit easier? Ive never had to route the cavitys in order to get them to fit in my rg's perhaps the newer routes are smaller.

Re: (?)Putting EMGs in my Prestige guitars.

DON'T MOD THE GUITARS!!!! MOD THE PICKUPS!!!! get a dremel or file to shape the ears of the pickups instead of routing. the pickups are way cheaper than modding a prestige. easier to do than routing as well, the guitar you have to worry about paint chipping. not to mention the permanent change to the physical guitar and its resale value.

new pickups- at the most $300 for hsh as emgs
or a new prestige ibanez- $700 used for, at the least, a rg15xx.
see the logic?

MOD THE PICKUPS!!!!
