2550 "black" chrome fading - WTF?

I've had my 2550 for 9 months now. I began noticing about 3-4 months ago that the black coating on the bridge had started fading off where the palm of my hand usually rested (on the 4,5,6th strings) revealing chrome beneath.

Furthermore, the volume knob has shown the same kind of fade.

ALL of the hardware on this guitar is treated with the black finish.

I decided to polish the whole thing and holy **** did it strip that black finish off of the bridge in short order. I now have a frigging brilliant chrome bridge on a guitar thats supposed to be 110% black in every bloody way.

Has anyone else with this type of hardware experienced this??

It's called "Cosmo" chrome and yes, apparently it wears out. Try washing your hands before playing your guitar. It might be that the oils on your hand are interacting with the finish and causing it to wear.

Re: 2550 "black" chrome fading - WTF?

i did that, the finish came off the bridge and then a guy at my local shop sold me somekind of clothing that is good for cleaning guitars, and it did, it cleaned the guitar but when i clean the bridge the clothing began to turn black... watching how the black or cosmo finish began to fade and only in one side i realize that i might have something here... so i took apart the tremolo and polish every part, the only thing that did not go thru the process was the nut, but all of the other pieces were chrome like, i'll post some pics of it when i can.

Best two ways to protect "cosmo black" hardware:

1: Simply don't play the guitar in question.

2: Wear gloves.

Would this type of wear be covered under warranty at all? I don't suppose they've fixed this for the 2007 models...

Same things happening with mine, it's not that bad though. It's almost 2 years old. The screws are where it's REALLY worn off...looks pretty bad.

Some of the finish is wearing off the trem and knobs...I'll just let time wear em out. I wipe the parts down after playing but I don't push too hard...why speed up the process?

I may replace the screws sometime...they really do look like ass.

The current cosmo finish blows, and wears off quite easily. I just polish it all off to get to the chrome.

Alot of trem designs are prone to wearing off of the color, some more than others. Ibanezs obviously being one of the biggest. Look at les pauls from the 50's though. No chrome left on any of them that have been played.

It's normal. I've noticed some wear after a couple weeks on mine.

Any mild polish will work, such as Brasso, or 3M final finish. Hell you can even tooth paste mixed with a little water.

Same thing with me, finish wore off on the lower saddles. It appears to have stopped now. I don't really mind, it looks kinda cool
