Question

5-Way Selector Switch Wiring?? Help

Hi Ibanez dudes,
I am new to this but not new to Ibanez UVs and J-Customs. Been playing for a long time and love em. I have a JCRG&-1 VV which I bought in Japan and love deeply. I don't like the stock pickups (who does - whats with them putting em in if nobody likes them?) Anway, I want to put Some Duncans in but the 5-way slector is way complex - its a special opne for high end J-Customs and others - a VLX91 and I can't work it out. Does anyone have a wiring diagram for this model of J-Custom OR a diagram for the solder points on this switch!??
I emailed Ibanez in Japan and no answer. Nobody answers me so getting pretty frustrated. Anyway, begging your mercy etc would be grateful if someone could help me.

Re: 5-Way Selector Switch Wiring?? Help

I think i could help you out. I'm no expert, but i did manage to successfully replace the pickups in my RG7CT with Seymour Duncan '59 and JB. Simplest explanation would be to look at one pickup at a time and figure out the color codes for the pickups. What pickups are in there now, Dimarzios? The kind of switch doesn't matter as long as you want to wire the new pickups in the same way as the old ones.

Re: 5-Way Selector Switch Wiring?? Help

Hi Sepsis311,
Thanks for replying to me and you offer of help. The background to this might help my answer - I normally do mods myself but this slector switch made me shudder (not being an electrical guru) so I took it to a shop and basically they made it alot worse by taking everything off it and then asking for more mone to fix it up. I took it back at that stage not wanting to get ripped any further. So now I am trying to put the original pickups back on and have no starting point. The original pickups are RG-7's and being Dimarzios, I know the wire colour codes. However, trying to figure out where the wires should go on this VLX91 (24 lug 4 pole) contraption, is quite a challenge. I dont know where to start except for the earth wire to the Vol Pot. So if you or anyone else has a diagram showing the stock/original wiring for these 7 strings (2 Humbuckers, 2 pots) on this VLX91 switch, then I would be really, really grateful.
Thanks for answering my message - even Ibanez wouldn't get back to me on this one!

I don't know how the switching on your guitar was originally, but this one should be a good start.

Have fun! I'm still having nightmares because of those vlx switches.

i think i've got what you're looking for:

if your J-Custom is a two humbucker guitar, then the wiring diagram for the RG2027 may also help you out -- it uses the VLX91 switch with two humbuckers.
