Anybody has difficulty with RG old-school heel neck?

Just got an used RG550. I can not access the 24th fret on the neck comfortably. I must take my thumb off the back of the neck to access to it and even then I cannot make any vibration!! It's a pain in the ass, compared to my RG1570 which is AANJ. How about you guys? I think my hand is small!

Re: Anybody has difficulty with RG old-school heel neck?

yep, the AANJ gets easier access to the upper frets but i don't care, as i never get higher than the 16th fret

ps: i've once seen Paul Gilbert literally wrapping his hand around his custom PGM's old-style joint. he could get vibrato on the 24th fret of the G-string (!!!) WHILE muting the low-E string with his thumb (yes, same hand!). i thought it was a hologram made by Pixar...

Actually I got my first AANJ guitar a week ago. It's more difficult than the old school ones :-o Always been used the a square neck joint but I'm sure I'll get used to this new innovation.

The older joint just seems more solid to me and all things being equal, I would rather have it over the AANJ.

The old-school neck heel is a big reason why I didn't keep my RG20th. AANJ for me and my sausages!

Yeap... Me too! My only AANJ is my RG7620. All others are square heel joints by choice.

Re: Anybody has difficulty with RG old-school heel neck?

Yes AAJN is much easier to access higher frets. But for me, and a few others here the old style joint sounds better, and I'm use to it now I can reach the 24th with no problem. My next guitar will be another 550 with old neck.

Re: Anybody has difficulty with RG old-school heel neck?

my main player is still a 1992 RG450 - it does not even have teh semi-cut tilt heel of the 550, its just a large block and I love it !
I have to adapt my hand style a little when coming off one of my AANJ guitars but it dont take long.

I would love an original 550..

Re: Anybody has difficulty with RG old-school heel neck?

didn't know there were so many old school neck joint fans! i am also a square heel guy, my main guitars are the old school rt450s and the also have the non sculpted square heels. but i have large hands and reach is not an issue. i can see the benefit of aanj for those who have small hands. for them, a little loss of some tone is worth the benefit of increased reach.
