Re: Anyone got a new RGA 121?

Set twice and you're boned and need new foam... Springs add just the little bit of extra play that someone else might want if desired. Either way it'll be good. One's just better.

Re: Anyone got a new RGA 121?

foam vs spring ie. "solid connection" is an oxymoron

foam is good as a shim to fully compress but offers minimal height adjustability. i'd keep both in the parts bin

Re: Anyone got a new RGA 121?

"Solid" in that it doesn't allow for the wobble that springs do.

And, twice adjusted, the foam is in need of replacing, only if it's raised on the second [although i use foam that probably has a few more adjustments in it than factory foam]. I'll stick with the foam, which anybody can buy at any home improvement store for $1

Springs are free and you don't need to go anywhere to get them because they're already installed. ----- I just wanted 200 posts. heh...

Re: Anyone got a new RGA 121?

Not totally, at least we're OT

Speaking of jacked, I just opened the door to find a box from FedEx with a "Relabel" on it. To "Ibanez" but with my address. It's a GRG170DX, and a little damaged at that, but when shipping in a cardboard box I guess that can be expected. Evidently some dealer was returning it to Ibanez, the label got damaged, and it got my address on it?! Go figure that one, back to Ibanez it goes LOL

I checked my 121 & on the bridge p/up, the poles do not line up on the E, A, B, & E strings. The two E strings are the worst.

Re: Anyone got a new RGA 121?

so i guess i'm the one that brought ALL this up in a different thread about springs and pole alignment on the new Gibraltor Plus brige with the new RGA121 i just got so i will throw a thing or two i have learned out there to chew on.
1. it has V7, V8 direct mounted pups w/ no springs, small piece of foam and small wood block underneath. pups were so low that the output was very poor and the foam was compressed so adjustment wasn't an option. i added springs under each of the pups and viola! the V7 and V8 pups are now tolerable in terms of output. i have now played this guitar at about 6 gigs since the added springs and they made ALL the difference between being playable or not. i'm sure there are other fixes to get the same results but this is what i had avaiable and it worked. i don't have any noticable "weeble wobble" going on with the pups - again, i just haven't had it affect anything enough to notice it.
2. Gibraltor Plus bridge seems to have a wider string spacing to match the new dimensions of the RGA necks which are a few mm wider than standard RGs, Jems ect. still a very comfortable thin neck but it is wider than others. the spacing on the Gibraltor was designed for this neck but is still so wide that you don't have a perfect match with an F-spaced pup in the bridge. i've found that after you refer back to #1 of my post that it isn't an issue with a raised pup. it was an issue before i added the springs as the output was poor and the misalignment surely added top this problem.
3. as far as pricing for the RG121, YES - it is worth every penny of $900. if it is worth another $500+ for the gloss finished, flamed maple-top RGA321, that is up to the buyer. i'm happy with mine being a simple elegant natural finish. i've found good deals are to be had if you take the time but i personally recommend Eric (PM me for link to his website) and Rich. there are others like Matt that are very reputable as well and you just need to decide if saving $ or a meticulous set-up is what you need/want for what you spend your hard-earned cash on.
4. * i'm moving this small rant to auction/vendor talk for this last point.

Re: Anyone got a new RGA 121?

Man, thats a lot of input. Thanks to all for clearing up the pickup and string spacing issue I had.
I read that the neck is a little wider. I S1520 neck is wide enough, Iam not sure if I want something wider. I really wish a store in Alabama would get one of these so I could at least play it before I dole out the cash for one.
But thanks to all the board members for the info.

Re: Anyone got a new RGA 121?

Okay, now I have another question about the neck. I was going to start saving up for the RGA because I thought it had the same neck as the other Prestige RGs (RG1570, 2570, etc.) but now I'm hearing that the neck is actually wider. Is it as wide as a Wizard II neck or is it somewhere in between a Wizard II and a Wizard Prestige neck? I loved how the neck felt on the RG1570 and was hoping to have that feel with a nice fixed bridge. But if it's the same width as a Wizard II neck then maybe I should just save my cash, buy a RG321 and throw in some better pickups.

Re: Anyone got a new RGA 121?

Just as all MIJ Prestige neck are 18-20mm now, they're also all 57mm wide at the 24th [or 22nd, etc]. Ibanez always had very tight clearance from the E's to the edge and the extra 1mm makes allot of difference in available playing surface.

Re: Anyone got a new RGA 121?

the neck feels great! i am used to MIJ RGs and Jems and this RGA feels like a glove - not too wide, not too thin but just right! the extra clearance Rich is talking about makes a big difference for the better. i'm less likely when playing some "frantic stuff" to pull a string off the side of the fretboard like with some other guitars have been prone to do.
i love the feel of the new bridge, just like Eric said i would. i'm still trying to get used to how smooth it is and i guess i've gotten away from resting my hand on the bridge from playing w/ trems for so long. there is a relaxing sense i get from this guitar and i might "dig in" a little more because i'm not worried about the strings going sharp like a trem equiped guitar does.
pic from last weekend playing some dual guitar stuff w/ Pappa Joe in my cover band
http://photobucket.com/albums/v334/s...t=100_0203.jpg
you can see me resting my hand on the bridge. Pappa Joe is playing a Prestige AX1220bbk with a different Gibraltor bridge that isn't near as smooth as this Gibraltor plus is.

Re: Anyone got a new RGA 121?

I'm really hoping that Ibanez takes their RGA's further and offers a model with a trem doesn't have to be an Edge Pro a Wilkinson VS-100 (gold hardware) would be very cool.

Regards

André
