I like them all. Go figure. I need to get one with the vine inlay at some point, but I'll be in the used market for sure. Here's the offset dot model 1802 slk I got from Rich:

Re: Does the Vine Inlay spoil contemporary J-Customs for you?

I used to own an offset dot RG8520

and now own an ebony board, vine inlay RG8670.

The 8670 is just more of a "wow" guitar. The vine inlay is quite stunning in person. The "stem" is maple, which looks amazing set against the ebony board and the leaves are a mix of silver, mirror and abalone. And the abalone is top notch, not the cheap stuff Ibanez puts on the rest of their guitars. Here's a closeup:

I do love offset dots and wish I still had a guitar with them. My first Ibanez was a USRG30BT.

Thanks. I love that guitar. It's unfortunate (or fortunate for me?) that Ibanez has made very few JC's with ebony fretboards.

I'm on a new quest. Let me know if you spot one anywhere.

There's a fairly rough black one that's been sitting on eBay for a while: 221135781040

It could be worth it if the price dropped a bit and you were willing to put some work into the guitar.

- The clouds on top could probably be buffed out
- The dark spot on the neck could probably be removed and the back of the neck refinished
- The hardware has corrosion, but is the same as an '03 RGT3120, which aren't that hard to find fairly reasonable prices. You could buy one with mint hardware and swap it with the JC.

I was checking that out. It's cool, and price is OK, but I would prefer to hold out for something other than black. I've got the black 1802.....

Beggars can't be chosers, I know, but isn't the search part of the fun?

Absolutely!

I looked for that 8670 for a while, but I've seen them come up on eBay since. There was a nice VV that went for a very reasonable price not that long ago and a basically new TV that got a bit over $2000.

I got mine from a guy in the UK on this site.

Black Onyx isn't quite black. Have you seen one in person?

If that's the current color, I saw at at NAMM last year... Agreed it's not really black. But I've got the JCustom RG1802 SLK pictured here elsewhere... so I'd like to go with purple or blue maybe. I love that blue one.

It's worth holding out to see if you can snag one of the RG8670's, they are def one of my fave J Custom models. I have the Purple and Blue models:

Re: Does the Vine Inlay spoil contemporary J-Customs for you?

I prefer the offset dots on most colours, but if the body colour is dark and understated, the vine can look great. Looks great on a Black Onyx RG8420. Not much of a fan of the vine on the orange/VV coloured guitars but each to their own. I don't find the vine confusing though - I'm more likely to be a fret out doing arpeggios on offset dots.
