Duncan vs. Dimarzio

As a wee lad, i took a gander at the endorsees of Dimarzio and that pretty much decided what i would try. Upon maturing a bit, i decided to give the Duncans a try in my AS80 and they sound amazing. Granted, the guitar itself had no business sounding that good for only $500 ( i taught at a music store) stock, but the JB and Jazz pups are astounding.

Re: Duncan vs. Dimarzio

Yep, I'd take a JB all day, and twice on Tuesday over any Dimarzio

I actually like both, I've always think the dimarzio is a bit harsh compared to the duncans though,

And there was I thinking Dee was dyslexic !!

You cannot make general statements about Dimarzio vs DS er sorry SD, you have to judge each individual pup on it's own merits.

Re: Duncan vs. Dimarzio

Appart from all the innuendo in this thread I got to say that I much prefere Duncans over DiMarzios. The hot rail is my fav pick up of all time. Through my rig and I guess most importantly when I'm playing the guitars it totally kills Evos and Tone Zones....

that is a two-way road, some of us know how girls talk when we aren't around

back on topic

i prefer Duncans to Dimarzio's but i still use some Dimarzio pups in certain guitars, usually basswood. the JB and Jazz combo is one of my fav goto combos i use in maple topped mahogany guitars.
i think there are more manufacturers that use a JB in the bridge stock than those that use Dimarzio pups stock - maybe that is saying something about the Duncans maybe it isn't, who knows?
i do want to try the new Duncans jaxadam has been talking about. they are like two pups in one but i don't remember what they are called off the top of my head. i think i will goto Duncans webpage and research them a little for my SZ4020 (pups are Duncan/IBZ pups stock that aren't bad at all but i can only imagine if i can improve on something that is near perfect - BOOM!).

Re: Duncan vs. Dimarzio

The original poster's experience mirrors my own. Growing up seeing Satch, Vai and Gilbert pimping DiMarzio in the pages of magazines, using their pups in the signature models, I just assumed these were the best pickups in the world. Advertising really works, I guess.

Then BrianH from these forums recommended a Seymour Duncan Hot Stack years ago for a project I was working on (very short clip here) and when I fitted it I was astounded by the tone. Probably my favorite pickup.

"What else have I been missing?" I wondered.

It gave me the curiosity to stray from the DiMarzio box. For my next project I may use Duncans, or Laces, whatever seems right. It used to be a case of researching 'what DiMarzios would be right?' for a given replacement or project, but now it's a case of 'what pickups would be right?'

That's got to be healthier.

DiMarzio still makes great products, though, and helped me out with some custom stuff. Amazing customer service. But it can only be good to broaden your horizons. Even if it's an Ibanez you're fitting, it doesn't have to be a DiMarzio.

I'm in the exact same predicament right now. I really want to get new pups, but I freeze up when it comes to making a decision. There are just so many factors to consider when deciding on a pickup and I don't want to make a mistake. I bought the Seymour Duncan DVD to hopefully help me and I think I've played all of the samples on Dimarzios website. It's just so hard to translate how that will sound on MY guitar.
