Hey Rich,

Do you have a USRG guitar? The stock neck PU is the PAF Pro but the tone I am getting from it is not EXACTLY what I am looking for. How would you describe the PAF Pro vs. the Air Norton in terms of tone? I mean, looking at the tone curves for those two they look a HECK of a lot different from one another. The AN seems to really have alot of bass and mids and rolled back treble, whereas the PAF Pro has gained down mids and bass and a treble peak. Granted, the PAF Pro compared to the HFH is very different animal as well. Just trying to pick everyone's brain.

Thanks,
Jeff
jeff, i don't have a usrg. i went for the rgt3120. i like mahogany better than alder. i had alder with my rt650 and several strats. i am finding that i don't care for it much. for strats i like ash, ala YJM and SRV. for rock and everything else, i like mahogany. the HFH i has was in a basswood PGM500. i was not impressed to see a humbucker that had no meat. the tone zone was the saving grace, tho. i have grown to love the paf pro in the neck of my SC420. after i stripped the paint off the guitar started to open up and breath more, the paf pro in the neck is way fat w/o mud. like a P90 almost, but a tad fatter. not as gritty as a P90(which is why i love a P90 in the neck), but like a paf with the balls of a P90 and the snappy like quack of a strat single. i was very impressed with it in that guitar, although when it was in the rgt i couldn't stand it and ripped both of them out in a matter of 5 minutes playing it.

i have made a personal commitment to myself, no more alder or basswood(unless i get an awesome deal). just mahogany and ash, someday a RBM2 with KOA...... i just have grown in love with the tones due to their diversity in the tonal spectrum. mahogany is warm and ash is super bright. fits the bill and both are super resonant woods and dense to help with sustain (not to mention heavy). i would imagine that the paf pro would sound great on the usrg30, but snipe may be right. since it is alder(a strat type wood) you may want to go for the HFH and get that single coil type snap and quack from it and for power in the SS.

Now THERE is something I hadn't thought of. Is there any way to get a good idea of how a particular PU will sound when coil-tapped? For instance, does it just effect the output voltage in a impedance-divider sort of way, or is there more to it than just a decrease in output voltage? The only thing that I DON'T like about coil tapping the AN is if I have to drill any holes in the body to accomodate a DPDT switch to coil tap the sucker. I like all 5 of the sounds I get from the 5 way switch right now when it comes to CLEAN stuff. The 2nd and 4th positions have always been equated to CLEAN tone for me. BTW, I may have missed it somewhere on this site, but is there a wiring diagram or explanation of the 5 positions on these USRG guitars somewhere? I mean, heck, if somehow the 5 position switch already DOES the coil tapping then I may be set. Thanks for any info you can give me on this.

Regards,
Jeff
jeff, you don't have to drill if you don't want to. a push/pull pot is the best way to go. i have done this to a few guitars and love it. also, the vlx91/otax switch can do anything you want it to do. so if your willing to take time to design a diagram from scratch to do EXACTLY what you want, that switch can do it. i would do either or.
