First Ibanez! rg 2770 prestige vs RGT42

Hi all, after 10 years I decided to pick up the guitar again so I hit up the auctions looking for an RGT42 because I want to learn how to shred on a budget (around $300).

Anyway, I found an rg 2770 prestige with 3 minutes left to go on the auction site and I bid on it figuring prestiges are the top of the line. I also figured I'd be outbet anyway! Well, I won, but I went a bit over-budget (580 bucks!). Did I get a decent deal, and how does it compare to the RGT42?

I also got a set of EMGs (81/85) to replace after I found an RGT with an HH setup, but the 2770 is an HSH. Any advice on what to do with the single coil in the middle? Is there a single coil match for the 81/85 that I might want to drop in? The current pickups are stock.

I was thinking about just switching the 5-way toggle to a 3-way on/off and having the single coil just for show :P.

I have an RGT42 w/ emgs that gets far more play than my prestige or jcustom. I never use the semi-crappy trem, but other than that, it's super solid. I'm not afraid to thrash it around like I would be with my prestige, worrying about scratches and stuff.

the 2770 is fabulous! you got a great deal! and you will love it!- if you're going the EMG route i am sure you can pick up an SA single pretty easily on the 'bay. The money you saved on the auction can be put to the SA.

Thanks guys, that's great to know (both that I got a good guitar, and that I should be careful not to bang it around =).

I'll look into the SA and see what I can find here. Other than that, any other mods/options I might want to consider in the future? I was thinking about fixing a tremol-no to it, and I was wondering what the heck are those knobs that you pull out that so radically change the guitar's sound? I have one on a weird hohner headless guitar here.

@SYL: I'm a huge Devin Townsend fan myself. Got a chance to hang out with him in Toronto for a weekend when SYL opened for Black Label Society, then did their own "intimate" show the next night. We ate pitas, he invited me to help set up the show/be a roadie that night, and he let me smoke his stuff. Awesome guy, awesome band, awesome nick you got there .

That was.. a long time back, I don't even remember. Probably not hard to find out though. That was his first concert in Toronto, and probably his last. He said it just wasn't financially worthwhile for him to play there. Europe and Asia were the best, and obviously Vancouver, since he didn't have to actually do any travelling to play there .

I kind of lost track of him recently, though I caught a clip on Youtube of him explaining what gear he uses - and subsequently bought a Maxon od808 for myself because of that. Other than that, I'm not sure.

BTW, what's Ki? A newer new album?
