Fret wire on RG3120
Anyone know what
fret wire
this is on my 3120? Feels quite a lot thinner than my old RG750, I kinda miss those frets.

Yeah, it's a weird one. They are supposed to have Wizard necks but they definately don't. The difference is instantly noticable.

Mine feels a little thicker than an original Wizard, but still an awesome neck.

Re: Fret wire on RG3120
I got the blue one. It was made in 2003, but I bought it from a friend (who had bought it new back in '03) who didn't want it anymore for some God forsaken reason. LOL
I had a Dark Red model, too, for a little while, but didn't care for the color, so I sold it to someone on this board, actually.
You have the Dark Red one, don't you? What do YOU think of it in person?
And, here's mine right here:
It's actually a pretty heavy guitar for an Ibanez.

Re: Fret wire on RG3120
Nice.
I do have the red one, and the colour is amazing. Mine is a like an intense cherry red. There isn't a huge amount of flame, but I don't generally go for flame tops anyways, so that's OK. I like solid colours most of the time. One thing I noticed is that camera's really have a hard time reproducing the colour. My girlfriend took quite a lot of pics and it looks different in every one.
Overall, I'm extremely happy with it. I just need to get it set up perfectly because right now it's giving me a hard time. I took the shim out from the neck pocket and it feels better. Before this it was buzzing way too much at the top frets. I need a Rich Harris setup. Too bad he's thousands of miles away!
It's definately the best guitar I have ever owned. I agree with you when you say it's heavy. It really is, but it feels very solid and dependable.

Re: Fret wire on RG3120
Awesome.
It's funny because the one pictured above is quite heavy, yet the Dark Red one I owned was light as hell. So, yours is pretty heavy? Weird, huh?
I live only about 8 hours away from Rich, so I could bring my guitar, I just don't feel like driving down there. LOL

Re: Fret wire on RG3120
Yes, it is heavy indeed man, well compared to my old basswood RG's it is, but not as heavy as a
Les Paul
or something. I'd say it's a good weight, not too heavy to be uncomfortable when standing up, not too light. I was just thinking how perfectly balanced it is earlier when playing with a strap on.
UGH! Wait! That sounded odd.
Strap on?!!

Re: Fret wire on RG3120
My 3120 (2000 vintage) I would characterize as "light". (I have two RG520QS's, identical in appearance, but one is
noticeably
heavier than the other. Point being, even
Ibanez guitars
that are supposedly identical can have markedly different weights.) The 3120 neck is definitely not a wizard. It's thicker than the wizard, for a long time I didn't like it (er, that is, I preferred the thin wizard), but I became used to it after awhile and now prefer it to the wizard, much to my own surprise. It is closer to the neck on a 7vwh than to the wizard, (but not the same, at a minimum, the volute is different). Someone once told me it reminded them of the neck on a JPM. I don't know about that.

Re: Fret wire on RG3120
guys its time to start the rg3120 club
j/k
jazzterminator it looks awsome i have the same one but mine seems darker in color its more greenish or darker blue
na guys our 3120 is 19mm its a real wizard 2 neck, its how wizard 2s are supposed to feel.
there really awsome shredder guitars, legato is like insanely easey on them, but thats cause my action is a whole lot closer than my 750
it is the heaviest rg ive ever held thats for sure
dee you should go with lower action on this guitar, i bet youll notice it will have a totally different geel than any other guitar youve felt with really low action

Re: Fret wire on RG3120
Hello, just thought I'd drop my first line here on Jemsite, pertaining to this topic of discussion. If it helps at all, the 3120's are Wizard necks from 2000-2002, BUT with a super wizard cut, which, by the way at that time was the same as a J-Custom RG9570 cut, that cut is a 17mm/20mm. Why Ibanez in the same year listed the Prestige 3120 as Wizard though it really had a Super Wizard cut, I don't know. But those are the facts, I've owned and still do own some of the models mentioned here and you can confirm this on Rich's site and Jemsite if you go to Rich's library.
What's interesting is anyone thinking that this cut is thick. This Wizard cut on the 3120's then is skinnier, thinner than the Prestige cut now on '06 models, which is 18mm/20mm. Even now Ibanez has changed the J-Custom's for '06 to 17mm/19mm, which is the thinnest I know of yet. And it is labeled Super Wizard. All these facts can easily be found with a little research on the references I listed above and on Ibanez's website, go to Japan.
I personally love the Super Wizard/Wizard cut of 17mm/20mm, more than all the others! My 9570TB has it, my PGM301 has it, and my 9570TRD Rich just shipped today has it! The next favorites of mine are the 18mm/20mm that are on my RGT's, RGA, and '05 3120's. My least favorite is the 8570 w/the 19.5mm/21.5mm which is the thickest cut I know of on these RG's and I'm just now finally getting use to.
I am going to get the new J-Custom model next year, the 8320 Biker's Black, I'm just waiting till my finances are prepared I've noticed that the Japanese companies tend to drop the price on last years models if there still lying around. Who know's, I had a bad experience with ishibashi and maybe, if I can get a guarantee from IKEBE, then I'll use them next, or if Rich can get his hands on one when I'm ready then it might be better to go threw him.
Well, sorry to babble on, hope this helps clear up any confusion on the subject being discussed.

We should ...lol. I personally think that, maybe with the exception of J. Customs (which I have not had the pleasure of playing yet), the 3120's are the best model Ibanez has released in the States.

Yes, I was discussing this with someone in another thread recently... maybe it was you? I don't remember. lol. But, yeah, the older 3120's are definitely darker. I have a friend who has one from 2000 (teaches in the same store as me) and his is much darker, almost like a dark blue. Every one that I see on e-bay is also a dark blue color. They must have lightened the finish for the 2003 models or something. Maybe they weren't selling and Ibanez wanted to try something new, so they changed the finish.
