Frets flaking?

I have a 2170FB. The 8th fret seems to be flaking. It's leaving metal shavings on my fretboard.

What is going on? Is this normal wear? I have never seen this before. Maybe because my other guitar has stainless steel frets?

Help?

YIKES!
Could be a nick in the fret causing it to flake when you bend the strings across that spot. I'd have it looked at.
Where in Chicago are you, I know a guy on the south side that will do a crown and level pretty inexpensively and has a quick turnaround time.

Question

Re: Frets flaking?

You sure it's not the strings that are 'flaking' ?? Or it could be very worn wound strings wearing the fret quicker ??

Re: Frets flaking?

I changed the strings thinking they were the culprit. It didn't go away. The flaking seems to be the worst on the 8th through 12th frets. I don't get it. There are tiny metal shavings on the fretboard! I play, wipe them off and the next time I play they are there again!

Thanks for the offer to hook me up with a Chicago luthier. I'm afraid the South Side is a little far though.

I'll have to take it in. Ugh. I hope it isn't something stupid.

Thanks for your help!

Re: Frets flaking?

Btw, I've owned the guitar for a year. If the fret bars were faulty wouldn't I have known by now?

Could it be I got a stinker with faulty fret bars? And it's out of warranty I'm sure so I'm *bleeped*.

What are the chances of Ibanez doing anything about it?

Re: Frets flaking?

Can you post a picture of your culprit frets? That might help better diagnose.

I have the same problem on my JS1000. The fretwire is not that great.

Re: Frets flaking?

What have you done about it?

These are not cheap guitars (at least in terms of price)! After only a year of light playing I might have to get a fret job?

I just noticed there is a fretwear on the first fret. It's a small dent.

Again, after only having it a year and it doesn't even see an hour a day consistently.

Re: Frets flaking?

Strange, I have never noticed this happening on my 5 ibanez guitars including a JS-1 and JS-100. I guess your fret wire might have been from a bad batch.

Re: Frets flaking?

It probably was. I haven't checked to see if the same problem happens on my crystal planet or my prm but, that's what I've noticed. Although, lately it hasn't happened that much.

How old is your guitar?
I would still be interested in seeing a picture of your problem frets.

It's an '06. I've had it a year and it was bought new. It was a gift from a friend.

It has a lot of sentimental value.

Still working on the photos. I haven't had the time to get the camera out yet.
