frets n necks

Greetings

I've owned Ibanez since 1988, on & off. I've had an RG570, RG560, a Floral JEM (yum!), original Vai JEM in Loch Nes Green or whatever they called it back then, & others. I got out of Ibanez for awhile. But when I saw the RGA series I wanted another one. So I ordered an RGA121 vintage violin finish. (I wanted a PGM301 but couldn't deal with the F-holes) Anyway, I was very disappointed to find not only was the RGA121 neck *not* the same as the original Wizard neck, but the frets were not nearly as big as the ones on my previous RG's & JEMS, too. All this leads to these questions. There's only one Ibz dealer in town & they stock only entry level stuff; no JEMS, no PGMs, so I'm hoping I can get answers here.

1. Does the PGM301 have frets more like the current Ibz or more like a 1988 RG-550?
2. Does anyone know the fret size of those RG's? If I remember correctly my floral JEM had Dunlop 6100s on it. Vai has changed to 6105's these days, I believe, & these are narrower frets which I don't like, personally.
Thanks for any info.

Re: frets n necks

It's actually the same fret wire on the RGA121 as is used on most of the current prestige line up and also the same as the PGM ! The Jems use a different fret wire though, you're right. The colour btw is violin flat (VLF) not vintage violin (VV) which is a gloss sunburst finish.

Re: frets n necks

That surprises me that the PGM301 would use the same frets as the RGA121. Those are so much lower profile; nothing like the RG's of the late 80's. Wonder if Paul Gilbert's models (the ones he *really* uses on stage) are the current style Prestige lower frets or the "old style" big ones? hhhmmmmmm......
Sure hope I can get confirmation on the fret size of those old RG frets.
