I tried a s1620 w/ new ZR trem....AWFUL!

well, the new 2003s are hitting the stores and i got to try the new s1620 with the zr system. I cant give you the complete nuts and bolts review because i was with the ever impatient girlfriend but heres my take. I was not impressed. This is definately not a shredders trem. Its very stiff, even considering the fact that its not broken in. Its definately not as sensitive as the edge or lo pro so gone are the days of flutters. I'm very disappointed at this, mostly because i missed my chance of getting a 2002 s1620 that had the lo pro on it. The new model weighs noticeably more than my s7420 which is a major turnoff because a lot of people (including myself) play the s guitars for that reason. If you had arthritis in your shoulder, you'd see where i'm coming from. I'm wondering if the zr was created because the new edge was just too deep for the s body. Well as far as i'm concerned, the s series has been ruined and I'll just have to get a rg3120.

That's what I said in another thread. That's really a drawback. Otherwise, I liked the feeling of the trem, I can put up with the missing flutter.

On the other hand, the ZR unit looks kinda "busy" or "bulky" to me. How about you?

That's really odd because the one they showed at NAMM fluttered just fine

"Zero Point system" and "flutter" -- isn't that a contradiction?

It's a Backstop of a different color, and you can flutter with a Backstop. Stevie does it really good

I guess they made the new S-series to fit the less metalized crowd, and a more traditional feel. That explains the new trems that are different from those on the RG.

I love the Edge on my 2002 S520EX, it's only that the bridge looks HUGE considering the rest of the dimensions of the S-series...
The new bridge looks nicer, too bad it fits my needs less.

I guess one S-series is enough next to RG's

I played the red/brown quilt (beautifuk veneer) MIK model at the guitar show...I was surprisingly impressed with the trem...did not feel overly stiff to me. It actually worked like it was supposed to...you can bend a string and the others hold thier tune pretty well. The look takes some getting used to, but functionally it was pleasing to me. I do wish that there would still be an S with an Edge.

i think the new ebmm petrucci tremolo system would suit those S very well. feels a little stiff but can flutter very well!

I think people are not realizing that the trem system as well as the Zero Point system are apparently adjustable. The effect of the Zero Point can be reduced to allow for a smoother, bouncier feel, more like the one that Rich witnessed at NAMM.
Don't dismiss this new concoction too hastily; I want to get into the nuts'n'bolts of one to really see what's going on, and how it can be adjusted...

I was put off by the news of the new trems, however, after playing with the new zr trem I have changed my mind. It does have a different feel to it but seemed extremely stable and perhaps smoother. I am just dissapointed that this trem isn't put on other models...yet.

And im dissapointed that the s series doesnt come with the edge now! Ill have to try the new trem, but by all means it looks like a kahler, which I assume is similar in feel

The only thing that makes the ZR trem like a Kahler is that it pivots on bearings. In all other respects, it's still very much a Floyd-based design with a fancy backstop/TremSetter on it.

I know what you mean. Nowadays I make sure that my girlfriend stays at home whenever I go try out guitars.

I have to agree with track. Mine actually buys them for me and she gets feisty... Maybe she'll pick that 1620 up for me sooner or later as I would love to have that trem.
