Info from Ishi - FGM neck vs. J-Custom RG neck

I just got an e-mail back from Rachel Ishi asking her the the measurements at the first fret for my RG8470.

Here's the info I got:

Scale - 648mm/25.5"
Width at Nut - 43mm
Width at Last Fret - 57mm
Thickness at 1st - 17mm
Thickness at 12th - 19mm
Radius - 430mm

I compared this to what my FGM100 specs are:

Width at Nut - 43mm
Width at Last Fret - 57mm
Thickness at 1st - 17mm
Thickness at 12th - 20mm

This makes no sense to me. The JC neck seems fatter. My hands are on the smaller side and I have no difficulty flying up and down the neck of my FGM but the JC takes a bit of effort to do it.

So why is one so much easier to play and feel smaller than the other?

Those specs are wrong. Those are 8670 specs.

So do you have the correct specs for the 8470? (Dammit I shoulda bought an 8670 )

Specs say 18-20 but it's really 18.5 - 20.5 [IIRC]

Now, I have an RG8270 and an RG8470 and the 8470 neck feels fatter to me !
The profile is different, which explains it partly, those are max dimensions, the RG8470 profile seems more of a C shape to me, so is 'fatter' on the edges.

Worth noting that the official specs changed between the RG8470A (the limited version that came out first without neck binding and a higher grade flame top) (18mm - 20mm)...

...and the current RG8470F model (neck binding, standard grade flame top) which is listed as 17mm - 19mm,

...so how your neck feels will depend on which variant you've got.

I know it will upset a lot of people but the RG8470A is really just an RG8270 with higher grade top and matching headstock !

Yeah, I agree that makes sense and would explain their matching neck profile. The reintroduction of the binding and the thinner neck profile (supposedly) was what sparked my interest in the 2006 models onwards.
