Re: J-Custom & Prestige confusion - What makes a J-C a J-C?

BTW, that angle is built right into the neck pocket on current JC and Prestige/Sigs, I've never heard the difference

I meant between the pre-angled pocket and the post in the same model. Then again I don't play many Prestige that have the AN BV and TZ pickup layout of a JC so doing a direct compare is not realistic.

I share my love of j customs and prestiges with you guys, But your comparing wal mart to victorias secret, Jay13 is one of the PRIMARY moderators for the OFFICIAL Ibanez forum, He works for Ibanez and he has always been honest, so give it up, They are making tolerances between J-customs and Prestiges to be simmilar, But without the extra hand craftsmanship and the better pickups, the prestige is inferior, Period

I think that to get this discussion to an end do we need to elucidate what the criterions for a good/better guitar are.
What are they? What criterions are there for a guitar to be called good, or better then another one?
For example, does polishing the frets more make a guitar better or is it just something someone spent more time on?
Fancy bindings and more details, is it making a guitar better or is it just spending more time again?
Are having better pickups making it a better guitar or is it just a guitar with better pickups?
What I mean is, have the pickups anything to do with the quality of the guitar itself?
There are loads of questions like this that needs some clarification.

For me is it like this, the J-Custom has better craftsmanship, if craftsmanship means spending more time on details that don’t really matter much for the performance of the instrument.
Yes, polishing the frets better makes it more comfortable to play, but the level there is between a J-custom and a Prestige is in my point of view of none importance.
The fret job on most Prestige I have played have been very good, the levels over that are for eyes only, that it looks cool, but my hands don’t really feel any difference playing the instrument. Maybe my hands are crazy and everybody ells can feel the difference?

But the J-Custom don’t have better craftsmanship if better craftsmanship means that the guitar is better built to the level where it sounds any better.
An average JC don’t sound any better then a Prestige, or any better then any of the signature guitars. The Prestige (or the signature guitars) doesn’t sound better then the JC either.

Pickups are for me noting that has anything to do with the quality of the guitar, just the price.
Good pickups make a guitar way better sounding, but they are a separate thing, just like the amp, sort of like add-ons.

A JC should cost more, details and time for that cost money, pickups cost money, and it should be like that. If those things are important to you, then yes, it is a better guitar out of the box.
But it does, in my ears, not sound any better then a Prestige and it won’t last any longer then a Prestige. An average Prestige will sound about the same as an average JC if they have the same pickups.
Taking them out on a 100 show tour will wear them both down equally, and they will have to be re-fretted after the same amount of use, the parts will have to be replaced after the same amount of use. They don’t stay in tune any better either, they all stay in tune very good.
For me is that quality that matters, sound and how well they hold up to a lot of use.
The rest is quality too, but more on the cosmetic side (noting wrong with that).

A JC is a better quality guitar, but for the things that matters to me as player are they the same.

A low budget guitar can in some cases be sounding as good as a high end (if you change the pickups), but wont get any better by time (only worse), can’t really take a lot of use without falling apart, don’t stay in tune as good. There are none of those differences between a JC and a Prestige.

Just for clarification, I’m talking about the upper range Prestige, not the lower range.
And I’m NOT putting the JC down, they are great guitars and should cost more because there are more time spent on them.
But they don’t sound or play any better.

Just my personal opinion, not facts.

I would say they were basically the same, with the J-Customs having more frills and being more consistant. There are Prestiges out there just as good as any J-custom as far as playability.

Now, if you are concerned with vines and high end pickups pre-picked out for you than by all means...

When I say this BTW, I am talking about the Japan Prestige guitars. The Korean Prestiges simply aren't consistantly well made.

As an owner of both a prestige and JC models there are (small) differences for me as a player other than the pups and cosmetics. The AANJ on the JC is better for high fret access, the recessed knobs on the JC don't 'get in the way' as much but for me are still in the 'wrong' place !!! The angled jack socket on the JC is brilliant too if you're a clumsy oaf like me !! I also prefer the 'feel' of stainless steel frets when string bending or using vibrato, and they don't tarnish or wear down as quick either. The woods are better quality visually, even the rosewood on the fretboard, but whether that makes them better 'tone woods' I'm not sure. I would think it must make a very slight difference for the better.

If they ever make a non-obnoxious and frilly looking S J-custom I would be ALL over it.

It would have to have a H-H pickup config and a wizard neck, and a EdgePro.

If I had my choice, I would give it an ebony fretboard, make it neckthrough and give it a toggle, push-pull knob like the JS guitars have.

The nonsense would be comparing a 1997 JC that has terrible QC to anything current

Everything from 1997 did. Things started to get better around 2000 and then progressively until today.

Thats interesting, I havent seen any bad ones yet, I guess i'll keep looking.

Do you think they were any better than the average Jap from pre-2000, or about the same?
