J-custom strap locks (1990's style recessed) - how can i fix them to the strap?

Hi guys,

I've having trouble forcing the semicircular iron securing piece into the groove at the back of the straplock on a 1997 J-Custom. Any suggestions? I've tried thumb pressure; holding it with a spanner and pushing; and finally hammering. Hammering is next to impossible as the black circular disc that fits flush against the iron semicircle gets in the way of the stroke.

The worst thing is, I have another guitar lying round with the same straplocks and somehow I managed that a couple of years back, but I don't remember having all this trouble - maybe they slipped on more easily.

There's got to be a simple solution - please help!

NB - J-Custom owners, don't get confused with the current syle of strap lock - totally different beastie.

I just used a set of pliers.

Thanks - you're dead right voodoo_child. I should be able to squeeze it on with pressure from both sides rather than tap it on - sometimes the obvious answers elude me!


I'm usually quite happy taking my guitars to pieces for maintenance and upgrades, yet this simple task got the better of me! lol.

Glad to hear that you got them working. Are you installing the strap locks on that J Custom RG1302 of mine that you ended up getting?
