Just bought an RG3120dr

Last night I purchased a 2001 RG3120 dr, not my first choice color, but it was a mint 2001 in pristine condition with case candy. There is one small factory finish paint blem about half the size of a matchstick head, can barely see it unless you look hard. There was a sticker on the neck of the guitar that left a lighter colored area on the neck - must have been on there at a store for some time. the guy I bought it from, said it sat in a music store in west palm beach until he bought it 2 years ago. It still has some of the plastic wrapping on the backside covers. I will post some pics after I receive the instrument. I am totally psyched.

I have reservations about the red, not having seen the DR in person, and there just isn't a lot of high quality photos of the red on the net. The condition of the instrument overrode my color preference just like I thought it might ... If I just cannot live with red, I might put it back up for sale.

I just sold my Ibanez Universe after it being my main instrument for nearly 8 years and this gives me two electrics - my Eric Johnson Strat in sunburst and this Rg3120.

I do have a question for you all, should a light 0000 sanding on the neck even out the sticker discoloration spot? Has anyone else messed with that?

Is it an actual discolor or is there any residue left over from the sticker that you may just need to wash off?

it was prolly the little ce sticker and they put it on before then finish the back of the neck so there is actuality no finish under it.

Aw, well then that stinks. It would've been great if he could've just washed off the possible residue and been done with it

Dude, if you love the guitar and hate the red, just have it refinned... those are great axes

I never thought about having it refinished -

I absolutely loved the RG20071 hbk -- the transblack - finish but it was just too far out of the price range I needed to stay near

I hope to post some pics soon should be here in next week - wOot

Congrats !! Red flame top guitars are notoriously difficult to photograph, it will look awesome in the flesh and under stage lighting ! The light patch left by the sticker is possibly because that area hasn't been subject to any daylight for years. It should turn the same colour over time. Many clearcoats yellow slightly over the years due to uv and contaminants in the air. It may even be that the neck is dirty except where the sticker was !

I found that the only good way to photograph mine was in direct sunlight.

Re: Just bought an RG3120dr

guitar came in yesterday - I'm loving it - the red is way better looking in person than I thought -- there are a few teeny tin marks here and there, you have to hunt really hard to find them, I've polished it twice which is how I even noticed them. Frets are 100% new, no signs of wear on the hardware, frets - the switch crackles a little bit - if anyone has any advice on that I'd love to hear from you. Neck is straight as an arrow with super low action - it is set up for 10's, which is great cause that is what I have on my EJ strat so I'm used to it. Has all the case candy and tools, book as well.

It's interesting because many people say that the pickups make the guitar a little muddy sounding, and I'm not finding that is the case. I'm using this with a Mesa rectifier preamp, t.c. g-major and into a Peavey Classic 60/60 with 6l6 tubes in it - my cleans are lights out and the dirty only gets muddy and buzzy when you max the gain - like on all rectos.

Re: Just bought an RG3120dr

The switch may just need using a bit to clean up any oxidisation or spray it with a switch cleaner spray. I don't have problems with the Tone Zone either, it is VERY pokey on the bottom strings though so it's easy to dial in too much gain/bass. Don't do it and it sounds awesome !!

if you go to a electronics store ask for "contact cleaner." give it a spritz of that and see what you get.

i love dr's! post more pics!
