My E's too high dog!

Finally got my J Custom from Rich, Yes, just as expected, it's amazing way too beautiful. I will love it forever.

Only thing I dislike feel wise is that both of my E strings are a bit high. It's not terrible, but I know it could be better.

I've had some experience carving bone nuts, but am too scared to do anything about this myself.

any advice, or know anyplaces in California I could go to. I live on Central Coast of CA, although I'm all over Nor, and So cal.

High at the bridge or the nut? If it's at the bridge you can set the radius to whatever you prefer with some saddle shims

It's the nut. I believe this is a somewhat common problem with J custom's, according to Rich.

It's the nut vs fret radius problem. Leaves the nut too high on the outside or way too buzzy in the center. Like the but is 430 radius and the board is 380.

Totally, I'm wondering if it's possible to shave down the slots on the E strings to compensate for the incorrect/non matching radius's.

There is nothing you can do with that locking nut. If there's another that would have a closer radius match, still be top mount, i just don't know, it wouldn't be an Ibanez part. Otherwise flattening the radius of the frets/board is the only solution, and that's a lot of flattening.

It might be that another nut could have a little more radius to it, they mold probably pours 8-10 at a time and I do notice inconsistencies between them.

How much does it effect the playability?

It's a bit scary to know that the best guitars Ibanez make have problems like this.

For me, the J-Custom has dropped down a few rungs on the "guitars I want" list.

Cant the nut be machined (milled) to match the fretboard radius more accuratly?

Or have one made from scratch (if you know anyone with the tooling), its not a complicated piece.

Finding an existing 43mm with a better radius match would be the simple choice.

oh I didnt realise that the 43mm nuts came in different radiuses.

43 is typical 1 11/16" used on may guitars.
